"But what has become of all of Ham mnnd's saloons?" asked oneof the investigators. "We have been all over town and we found less than half s dozen stores that look like they might have been saloons." They found only one place in Hammond which they had reason to suspect and learned on good authority that nothing had been sold there except soft stuff since July 1. In West Hammond several places were found selling beer and whiskey, but many of the old favorite places were apparently closed for good as both front and rear doors were heavily padlocked. Not a place was found In East Hammond by the Investigators. One saloon in East Chicago within 100 feet of the four corners was found selling whiskey openly across the bar. The proprietor said he was through with that kind of business, but his name and the address of his place was added t.the long list- The procedure of federal authorities notifying possible violators personally is auunusual one. but the step was taken in order to be sure thn; liquor did not lind its way Into tiic hands of atrikers and complicate affairs.
