BY IHVINO CHAYHEN. Confronted with the heaviest schedule in Its history and shot to bits by the loss of two ttars of 1318. the Hammond1 High school football eleven is somewhat i rounding into shape. Heavy drills have been held daily for the past few ve"ks with one workout a day after the classroom doors close. While considerable pessimism prevails amongst th purple and white supportc-s In regard to an eleven who will give northern Indiana teams a scrap. Coach Veenker. a graduate of Michigan aid late of the aviation service in Texas, has great hopes of developing a team capable of beating East Chicago. Gary. Renssalafr and South Bend. The roach knows there Is sortie stiff push-tig ahead. -but he figures that the return of Sr-arles means added strength sufficient to conquer any game. The great task of picking the best players from the score of talented backfield performers was complicated with the return of Searles. whose work ' in 1917 featured all the Hammond games. So far the other leading candidates for the backflcld positions are Houslcy,

Palmer, Keeler. Schreiber and Evans. Two of Inst year's letter men are sure of the end positions, providing they do not mee t- with any accidents before Saturday's game against Chicago Heights. Louie Hess, a brother of the famous AVallie Hess, is assured of being at the right end. while Lund will be at the 1'1't station. Stodola. Beckman and Kaiser

are scrapping it hot for the tackle posl

tions with the chances that Wilhelm's namesake will await his trial a littl later. Howl, who has had some exptrience on the grid Meld will no doubt become the rtgular center, his accurate handling of the onl Indicates that the roach will make no changes. Grace and Freeze are assured of the guard work with Cearing. another letter man, holding down the quarterback position., The school team has had several scrimmage nffairs with the youngsters lined up against their older brethern. AH of, the regulars with the exception of

I Housley. one of the leading candidates for the ba kflt ld. have gone through the 1 hcavv drills without any injuries. Most

of the work consists now of passing and j punting, but so far no real punter has j been found. Ted Palmer, who Is playing his last i year with the squad is the logical candl- j date for the kicking and of the game, but will have to go some to step Into Red Schillo's class. On account of a technical rule in high school athletics. Schlllo. who rlayed with the team for three years is unable to participite in ; any further games, and the same rule applies to Al Phrommer. who left school . rather than bother about rules, that are! as old as the Erie depot. Regrets have , been expressed on all sides that two of j the last year's stars are lost to the team, j This evening Coach Veenker will hdve : his men at Parduhn field to give them aj

chance to look over the Bobcats in their first scrimmage affair.
