GARY WILL MAINTAIN STRICT ORDER

That trict order will be maintained in Gary during the strike and that violence will not be toleratej on either side is the substances of a proclamation that will be issued by Mayor V. F. Uodjes of this city to the public sometime this afternoon. Chief of Tolice Forbis has also been notified to have his men in readings for any possible clash or bloodshed and has already out-lined his plans to meet the situation. All Zrook to Gary. Recognized as the largest steel center In the country, the eyes of 250.000 steel and iron workers are cast Garyward today, as It is now openly admitted by both sides in the big steel strike controversy, that as the strike goes in Gary, so it will go the nation over. The outcoma of the strike hinges on this city. Unless there is an eleventh hour criMS. nothing will stop the steel workers from walking out. Everything has been primed and set for the occasion. Mssi mettings are being held daily by th ateel workers and labor officials and all that now remains are the hours between now and the proclaiming of the strike and walkout at 6 o'clock next Monday morning. As the men walk out company officials will start the new shift schedule. This will be necessary on account of the decrease in the forces. It was circulated that the Gary works and subsidiary plants were going to shut down, but K is learned that the mills have enough

material on hand to last for months and will run until compelled to close. Tho workmen will be fed and house.! in tho plant, if it so boconios necessary. Just what the division of strength of tho strikers will be is an unccriaintly and the strike alone will tell. Steel company officials state that there urn only about 15 per cent of the employes who signified their intention of going out. while labor officials look for as high as 85 per cent. At Gary the men work under conditions which are accepted as models for industrial plants the world over. Families liv in miy-owned houses rented at low figures. The issues necessari

ly will be confined to recognition of the union. The home-owning and stock-holding class of employes in Gary have failed to show much enthusiasm over the strike, though a percentage of them may he afraid not to strike. It is in the radical element, many of them Rlirns, that the union organizers have found a fertiie field.
