TOUGH MEAT AND" FOWL If you buy a tough cut of beefsteak
tnd want to make it tender, cover it j
(or several hours with vinegar or lemon juice and olive oil and then broil or fry it. .You will be surprised at the difference. A little vinegar in the water in nhteh a fowl or a piece of mutton is being boiled will serve
the same purpose; and a dash of j vinegar in a kettle of boiled fish re- j moves the strong "fishy" taste that is ia objectionable. TO CLEAR MUDDY WATER Sti- in powdered alum a tablespoonful to every four gallons and when sit settles, draw off the clear water which may be used for washing, cooking and even for drinking as the slum leaves practically no taste. THE CARE OF THE LAMP WICK If your lamp smokes or smells unpleasantly, your wick may need a bath. If th:it is the case, boil the wick in vinegar, then dry it in the sun and you ' will have a clearer light and no smoke or' odor. ' WHEN PULLING THREADS IN LINEN Make a good lather of soap and water and brush over the linen where the threads ere "to be pulled, using a shaving brush or some other soft brush. Let it dry. The threads can then be pulLrd out easily' and the task of hemstitching reduced, by about a hird. v A SIMPLE DEODORANT If a room is filled with an unpleasant odor, it may be dissipated' by allowing a piece of dried orange peel to smoulder on a red hot iron or an old shovel. The unpleasant odor will disappear nd a very fragrant one remain in its 'lace, .
T.v JOE PENNINGTON TO PREVENT LEATHER FROM CRACKING
Add drop of neat's-foot oil to the shoe blacking or use the neet's foot oil on damp boots and shoes and the leather will not crack as tha shoe dries. THE CORRECT WAY TO WATER PALMS If they are kept indoors is to sponge the leaves once a week with. lukewarm water to which a little milk has been added. Then set the plant for two hours in lukewarm water deep enough to completely cover the pot. TO POLISH PATENT LEATHER Remove all dust and apply mixture of one part linseed oil to two parts cream well mixed and applied with a bit of flannel. The shoe eliould then be rubbed briskly with a piece of dry
flannel. SAGGING CANE SEATS In chairs may be tightened by washing in very hot soapsuds and .leaving to dry in the open air. BOOKSHELVES Perfumed olive oil sprinkled on bookshelves will prevent j mold on books. , . MUDSTAINS May be removed from black clota by rubbing with a raw potato WINDOW WASHING Is made- easier if a little turpentine or alcohol is put in the water as this helps to polish the glass. ':
HOW TO REDUCE. A few simple ru'es concerning: reduction are given today. After all. the taking off of superfluous fiVsh is not tife hari. matter, most stout women think. Nor is it any - magic formula which uorks in mysterious fashion. It's as simple as first arithmetic. It Is, essentially, taking into the system less tlan you consume in energy. The food you eatibecomes energy. When you exercise or work, you concor.sume, you reduce. li you'take In more energy than you consume, you grow fat. Therefore, if you take in less than you tonslme. you reduce. That's the simple mathematical problem. .:You can work it out still another
way. You can take In as much energy that fs, eaf "as much food as you 2o now, and to burn it n9 and reduce you (vfcesrcise more than you do now. In thi? way. you are burring up more thinyotr are taking in. and you reduce. But the weak point In this method is that extra exercise produces a great ! avpc'tUe. so the stout woman often eats more than normally without knowing It. j Tou should exercise you must, to-; lr,.ep Healthy: but the best way to re- j duce is by taking in les3 food. And this j can be done in two ways also. j Either eat less in quantity of the sort , of foods you normaly take j Or, eat practically as much in quan- j rnv as you do r.ow. but change the j quality. Fat foods that do not produce, fksh. ' i Qneetlons and Answers. J A.! L. W. About the most ractlcal ; dress for both afternoon and rarty I wear would be georgette crepe- Get aj

T. Z Tour skin is probably slug
gish; ' it needs . stimulating- treatments. Buy a moderately stiff fresh brush and scrub the skin with hut water uul castile soap, rinse with hot water, use any gootS cream as a massage and end with an Ice rub. - Ttys will clear .the complexion wonderfully. Paula Make a paste of the henna and hot water, and apply after the shampoo. Let it stay on 15 minutes the first time, half an hour the second application..- and so on, till you have found the length ot tima required to produce the desired shade. . .
