THE REASON WHY

Way Do Coats Have Buttons oa the Sleeves f The practice of putting buttons on coat sleeves, which serve no useful purpose at all and do not add to the beauty of the coat is a relic of very old days. There was a time when people did not

use handkerchiefs, and It was common practice for men to wipe their noses on their sleeves. They had coats also in those days, but they did not have buttons on the sleeves. One of the olS kings finally developed the idea of dressing his soldiets in fancy uniforms, and, as he sat in his palace and reviewed his troops, he noticed many of them using the sleeves of their coats as handkerchiefs. He immediately issued a decree that all sleeves should, have a row of buttons sewed on them, but at a point directly opposite to where they are now on the sleeves. This was done to remind the soldiers that the sleeves of their beautiful uniforms were not to be used as handkerchiefs, and those who attempted to draw their sleeves in front of the nose were Quickly reminded or the decree by the ftuttons. wMch scratched them. And ko the buttons really had a quite useful purpose at one time," and so also Jl sleeves had buttons sewed on to them at this place. Later on. however, when the r.nsightly practice had been cured and people had learned to use handkerchiefs, the buttons remained as a decoration, but their former purpose whs lost sight of. Then some tailor or leader of fashion had the buttons set on thoj under sidetof nr sleeves for a change, and it became the fashion to have them there, and the tailors have been sewing them liere

ever since. Hook of Wonders. t Copyrighted by the Bureau of Industrial; 'Education. Inc., Washington, D. C.)

AN UNUSUAL SHOWER. If you want something a little out of the ordinary as a gift for the bride-to-be try the following plan. It was worked out very effectively by a girl who lived too far from a friend who, waa to be married to arrange any of the custo mary wedding showers. She bought one of the small wooden boxes with hinged covers which are filled with a hundred blank white cards and index cards of yellow, pink or b'.ue. These cards are labelled with the letters of the alphabet or else with the titles "Bread," "Cake." "Desserts," "Ilsh," "Preserves," "Soups," and so or through the menu. Then she sent several of the blank cards to each of her friends who knew the engaged girl and asked them to write thereon their favorite recipes. Each recipe was to be signed with the name of the donor. The result was gratifying. When she had received all the cards she found that sho had a collection of really choice and tried recipes.
