School Clothes

A aeesltlva child 1 ofttn mad utterly mlsarab'.a by having: to wear ugly or extram clothea, or ones that she feels in-tlncti-ely make her look absurd. It is not only the. part of rood taste, therefor, but also of consideration for our little, ones' feelings to dress them suitably and inconspicuously. Navy blue surge is the Ideal school dress, with bojcpleated skirt. It can b worn rlth a middy or. for smaller children, grulmpes can be used. The darker plaids are also charming, but the use of red or any brilliant color is to be avoided. Since the school dress is worn over and over one would grow very tired of red. Tan colored coats, while they harmonise well with various colored dresses and are becoming to dark-haired children, are not good economy for they show up every spot, and soil too readily. Dark blue, dark green and seal brown are better colors, but a red coat will be remembered If it has to be worn year after year or handed on to a small sister. If the best winter coat Is far trimmed it is cften possible to buy a band of the same fur and to match the coat material so as to make a simple but smart cap to go with the coat. These tight fitting little hats are very becoming to small girls with bobbed hair, and they are easy to make, as well as being far loss expensive than a plain felt would be purchased from a milliner. Raincoat, umbrella, rubbers, a warm sweater scarf, gloves and skating cap ra a few of the minor details, and if these ara made variations in shade of the color chosen for the coat and hat. our little girl will be very well and becomingly clad. If brown has been selected, the wardrobe can tone down from soft tans and yellows to deepest seal, or from dark navy to Alice blue.

FACTS THAT ARE WORTH KNOWING In Cal!fon1a and other parts of the TTet and South many ideas have recently found ready acceptance in the building of small houses, bungalows and apartments that have not as yet

been usd extensively in New York or its vicinity. In these places every effort seems to be bent toward meeting the needs of modern households, beginning with economy of floor epaca consequently of expense when" building, and alo economy in service after the quarters are occupied. The custom is becoming Increasingly popular amor g women in different parts of the country who are efficient home-makers in every sense of the word, not being engaged in any ouWside employment. t dispense entirely with tiie help of regular household assitants. The furnace man or the cleaning woman seem to have taken the place of the' former-domestic servants. Where a useful man is needed he attends to the furnace or other fires, cleans the sidewalk," washes the w!ndws and does the heavy -cleaning. As this can well be managed In about an hour's work each morning, and the same time in the afternoon. Many capable men have a number of houses in the same neighborhood that they visit daily in this way. ' The advantage in the arrangement is that it pays him better than regular furnace tending or window cleaning alone, yet it varies his work and makes it more Interesting and less monotoneoufi, while It also makes the burden of expense to the individual household very much less. StCCESSFlL EXPEDIENTS In ether homes the laundress who comes isveral days a week does the heavy cleaning and washing of windews at odd times before the daily washing or ironing:. One successful expedient for space, and labor saving that might well be more generally employed in the construction of suburban homes and apartments is the consolidation of kitchen and dininer room. Instead of cutting up the same amount of space Into two small choppy looking rooms, there is enormous advantage !n the one Jarge. airy kitchen-dining room, with windows on all sides, thus giving the Impression f more ample proportions to house or apartment. This rrangernent has been found very coney and convenient also time saving for those who do their housework. With fresh muslin curtains at the windows and & vase of flowers on the dining table, this dining room is quite s attractive and much more invitinr than many a formal, stately, forbidding dining room that one sometimes sees in a hem where this room Is never used except at meal times, thus setting apart the space of one room for only very occasional use.
