BUTTS WAS A SCHEMER BUT FAILED
Getting: the idea by overhearing: a conversation between two men In Hammond, in which they toM of how much money they had been able to make by iveigling Ignorant foreigners into parting witii their Liberty bonds by posing as government officers. Clifford A. Hutts. who gives his address as 331 Clinton street. Chariot, te, Mich., hastened to LoPorte and tried the same scheme. It failed and he ia now in the hands of the federal authorities. Special Agent George H. Bragdon. of the Department of Justice, was Informed of the exploits of Butts at I.aPorte and went there to investigate. It resulted in Butts being brought to Hammond this morning and givel a preliminary hearing before the V. S. Commissioner. According to the facts as gleaned by Mr. F.ragdon. Butts, after learning tl.e game in Hammond went to LaPorte and on the morning of August 29. called at the home of Mrs. Dellie 1'ells. He showed a star and told her he was a government agent sent out to inspect Liberty bonds. He explained that a mistake has been made in numbering the bonds and that this would have to be corrected in order !o validate them. Mrs. Pelis had.no bonds so Buptt went to the next house. This time he was an agent from the Kumley plant but his mission was the same. There was no bonds there, so he called on Mrs. Bessie Johnson who later made the complaint. He told Mrs. Johnson and lier niece to call at the First National Bank before noon and the corrected bonds would be ready. After he had departed with the bonds the women became suspicious and started after him. They overtook him in the business district and attacked him. A sensational scene followed in which the police intervened and learned the story. Butts was given a te'n day jail sentence and was fined ?50. He was turned over to the
