pany houses watched the impending battie. . photographer calmly took pictures of the rioting. HESTEEJUAN KIT. A rain of bricks anel stones followed in which several of the e.ff leers were i-truck but r.ono were seriously hurt. oirioer Fred Hesterman was hit on thej arm by a brick and the member was nearly fractured. As the poli.cmen prepared to protect themseivts with their weapons the men In the front ranks surrounding the officers began backing away when others in the rear were struggling to get at them. More shots were, tired. One man tired three times point blank at officer Car Fandrei and won Id have continued until he: had killed the officer had not a bulb t from the gun e.f one of his companions dropped the rioter in his tracks. STRIKER IS SHOT. The shooting- then became general. Capt. Hanlon and Officer Homrich had i narrow escapes from flying bullets. The' crowd scattered somewhat bu continued to hurl missiles and shoot at the guards. Capt. Strong seeing his men in peril, 1 ordered them to protect themselves. One man, a Hungarian with a long stemmed pipe hanging from a corner of his mouth deliberately took his stand on the sand ridge just south of Highland street and began emitins his revolver in the direction of a policeman. Several shots had been fired by him before a ball from one of the few ritlts in uso struck him. He diefi instantly. Things happened so rapidly that neither the policemen or the riot.er3 remember mifch of the details. As soon as it was seen that the officers with their superior weapons ha the advantage in spite of their numbers, the mob began scattering and in a short time the district had been cleared. The scene; resembled a battlefield, bodies do ted the pavement and grass of the vacant lots. Ambulances had been summoned from the Lyndora hotel as toon .as the shooting started and these with passenger automobiles which wer pressed into service were soon iarryii.fr the dead and injured away, offices of physicians were crowded with men who had received injuries of various degrees. Some were dressed hastily and sent on to St. Margaret's hospital, others who were merely scratched or had received only a few scattering shots from the riot guns were attended to and allowed to go home or taken to the police station. It is believed that Hammond physicians treated at least fifty injured men during the morning and others probably went home and dressed their own wounds. When it was seen that the trouble w as endel for the time being, I the members of the city and plant police! forces took an inventory of their cas-1 ualitles. Vnbelievable as it seemed tt: witnesses, not an officer had been scri-j ously hurt. Fred Hesterman as hit' on the arm with t. brick and though the! member was out of commission for a) while iho injury was not serious. Offi-J cer Singer v.-as kicken and beaten in tnej fight at close quarters, several others' of the Hammond and Standard forces' showed scratches and bruises. I "Police report that the women of the Staneiard district congregated in the' rear of the m b and cursed them vio-j lently because they did not rush in and! oierpe.vver the police. Others testify to that effect. j Narrow escapes were numerous and j many of the officers heard the call of) the death-dealing bulie-ts. mevnt for them, whizz uncomfortably near their ears. In the melee they had managed to! round up a number of men who were j thrown into the patrol wagon snd later! booked at t!i police station. Many of the strikers drifted back to! the scene and help care for their wound-j ed comrades but the bulk of the men fol-I lowed their usual custom of going to! Coy's park to hold a meeting. Close! watch was kept upon them during the, forenoon as it hail been rume.reai that another attempt would be made to wipe, out the band of policemen and attempt' the destruction of property in the stand-, ard district. Nothing devo!o'etl. however, end the situation at present is quiet. Crowds eof curious ones came to the scene of the rioting an 1 throughout the, morning li't'.e kne.ts clustered around; stains on the ground and staried at bu!-; let marks on posts and the sides of houses. The side of the bungalow of' George Mihaljevick. 33(j Highland street,: which is the house nearest Columbia ! avenue was peppered with the stmllshot from the riot guns. the bullets were nearly spent nnd rne penetrated the wire. She witnei.30ii the death of the Hungarian striker who foil on the hummock barely a hundred le.-t from her doorstep. Police will attempt to control the si'aation for the present with aid from tile sheriffs office and troops will not Ue called back to Hammond unless the si"ition becomes worse than is now expt c'. ed. Since the militia were vj ithtlrawn the city and plant polie forces have been handling th strike alone and thus far had had little trouble. Mayor lirovvu. Sheriff Uarnes and Chief of Police Austgen held a conference at noon today and decided not to call in the l rot f.t present. Sheriff Barnes is pwc.-r;.: in additional deputies and it is hoped that the combined forces will be able to handle the matter. It is argued by many that thert v.-j'.i be no repetition of this mornings disorders. They say that as soon as tc.e strikers have had sufficient time to think over the situation they will reaii v? the gravity of their acts and will remain quiet. Others declare that 'ic5 situation will never clear up until rise agitators known to be working amo .g the strikers are weeded out ami summarily dealt with If any means can b.i dtvised to reach them. It is pointed out that these agitators will at once proceed to make capital of the horor of th s morning and aided by relatives of the killed or wounded men will stir ".he strikers up to n even higher pilch. Only a few of the recognized lcad-rs amongnhe strikers were in the mob th morning. Joe Kolodzlg !s a recognized leader. One of them, Steve Evans, is now hovering near death in the- hospital with two ugly gun-shot wounds in tho back.
