By HIGH SITED. Dirt is undesirable, no matter nher it is. but the average automobile owner hsrs yet to learn that dirt on the running1 rear does more thnn merely cover up some painted or unpainted metal. Joints seemingly as tipht as a mechanic can Ket them allow dirt to pass through. The reason for the dirt being so unosirablo near working parts of the
ct;ais!a Is not so much because it doesn't look well, but because it eventi;.:: gets to a moving surface and starts rapid wear. If you own a watch with a screw back on it and you keep that match in one of your pockets where odd thinss are put occasionally. Just remove that screw back and notice the dirt that has worked its way in. I mention this merely to show that dirt gets into very small crevices quite easily. Around the eng-lne and other parts of the car there are supposedly tight Joints. In addition to actual openings. Take the front and coer. commonly called the timing gear case, cover. Vibration may loosen a few of the holding nuts.

Generators and starting1 motors, on ; ;v tho average car, do not et very much ' til attention of any kind by the owner, but Xfli they deserve a good cleaning. Some starting motors are not fully inclosed, ;W while others, even when covered, seem UJ' to accumulate dirt. I would suggest to the owner that IU when he has & few hours to spare dur- W ins any one month he give the engine a VJ thorough cleaning, removing dirt from VI, all Joints, from oil holes, etc. l The underneath parts of the car are V, admittedly hard to get t, but that M; should not be an excuse for total neg- ' lect. Vnderneath the car there may be k many places that require oil through M! small cups, oil holes, etc. While some manufacturers are so far behind as to m. continue to use oil holes in exposed hj

inch. With an accumulation of dirt over the cover some of the dirt is bound to get to the gear teeth. Dirt and lack of lubrication of front end gears are repponsible for rapid wear and noisy operation. Every owner ought to kep the engine clean by occasional kerosene bath. Spray kerosene all over the engine and wipe off very bit of dirt you can. This goes for the crank case as well as the parts that you can see when you lift the hood. Dirty oil, oil with sediment, old oil cot changed for sonys time, all are causes of rapid engine wear. How many owners ever see to it that the combination breather and oil filler is clean ea the inside In some designs there is every chance for a quantity of dirt to settle on the inside, and this is washed down into the crank case when the 'next oil filling is made. A dirty engine means a Joss in efficiency and a premature trip to the repair shop, where the cost of parts replacements will be higher than expected. Take the average Ford, and many of the larger care, and examine even the outside of the ignition unit. The Ford timers are usually covered -with mud and dirt, and this gets inside, cuts the segments, interferes with proper ignition.
In filling the transmission and rear
axle with oil or other lubricant be sure that the filling hole or opening is clean. Fouring oil into a small opening with dirt all around the outside is bad. because the dirt goes right in with the oil. Then you hear gear noises and wonder how It happened so suddenly. Universal points at best are hard o lubricate and even if covered w-ith a leather boot are not proof against the ravages of dirt and mud. The more dirt you allow to accumulate around these parts the more dirt will get to the working surfaces. It pays to have the car washed underneath, but it also pays to wipe the surfaces after spraying on water. The wiping is necessary because some of the dirt sticks fast. Look over the smaller parts of your car, the parts that are hard to see and get at, also examine parts that don't give you any trouble. You don't have to do any more than clean and lubricate them to make them run for a longer period.
Sometimes brakes are hard to operate VI

because mud gets into me joints at tne ; fjgj,

braking system. These parts cannot be
properly cleaned merely by wiping. One
must dismantle them to get a clean
working rurface that will operate freely when lubricated. Cleaning of this sort
prevents rusting and certainly goes tl

"Well, from the way she acts I should say that thirty-nine of the horses were dead." This must have been the funniest of
