COMPANY TO BE ORGANIZED SHORTLY New Steel Mill Planned for Aetna May Be in Operation Next Fall. With the return of C. E. Wirt from New York City, where he recently closed the deal for the 400 acres belonging to the old Aetna Powder Company, steps will be taken at once for the formation of a company to be known as the Aetna Iron & Steel Company, it was learned from reliable source today. The new sheet mill will ba erected by prominent Gary steel men and if possible an effort is to be made to have the plant in part operation before next fall. It was first announced that the consideration for the land was in tho neighborhood of $400,000, but only $390,000 was paid for the tract, a sum of $10,000 being taken oc as the Aetna Explosives Company officials wished to keep soma of the equipment not needed by the new concern. As expressed by one of the Gary men Interested in the new organization, the tract was purchased at a very reasonable price considering that there is about $100,000 worth of valuable machinery at the former plant, a large number of large buildings and material and in the neighborhood of four and one-half miles of railroad tracks on the site. A great deal of this is to be sold, especially the machinery and other valuable equipment, so that the cost of the land will run down to a very low fig- , ure.
NEW R. R. BILL IS
PROPOSED
f INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE1 WASHINGTON. Sept. 3 . Establishment of a system of profit sharing by empolyes ia but one of the far reaching: provisions of the bill for the restoration of the country's railroads to private ownership which was favorably reported today to the senate bv Senator Cummins. Republican, of Iowa as chairman of the senate interstate comerce committee. The measure provides for the repeal ot the federal control act of March 31, 1918 and the return of the railroads on the last day of the calendar month in which it becomes a law. Rates in fodce at the time the repeal takes effect, are te remain in full orce "until changed by competent authority." In many respects, the bill is extraordinary for the revolutionary changes, and the sweeping changes in railroad ownership,' management and operation incorporated in it. The labor featurea as summed up "by Senator Robinson, Democrat, of Arkansas, a member of the committee, "not only assure to employes Just, fair end reasonable hours, and working; condition, but it gives them representation on the board of directors of the various railroad corporations and establishes an employe and welfare fund from the excess earnings which It Is believed some of the railroads will derive from the rates to be established under the bill." GARY ICE PRICES Th. recent cool spell and the advent of fall weather has causod a noticeable drop in ice prices in Gary during the past few days, when it took a slump from the soaring price of $1.00 and better a hundred to 80 cents per one hundred pounds. Announcement to this effect was made by local Ice companies yesterday. Weeks ago dealers were required to pay 45 cents per one hundred pounds for ice made in Gary and 55 cents a hundred for ice shipped into Gary from other cities. Today both kinds of ice is being sold to the dealers for 40 cents a hundred pounds. Taking into consideration ail! over-head expenses the dealers and peddlers think they are not making any too much when they sell it to the consumer for 80 cents a hundred, tho prevailing price. As soon as the weather Kts considerably cooler, another drop in prices is expected. MILITARY TRAINING IN GARY SCHOOLS. The Sary schools are to give the boys military training. STRIKERS WILL NOT GIVE IN "The Gary Screw and Bolt Work" might as well move back to Pittsburgh if they think we are going to give in." is the sentiment expressed by the 450 striking employees, who walked out last week after the company officials refused to see a committee of workmen to reemploye two fired employees. So far the strikers and the company officials have reached no agreement and as both are P.rm in their decisions it looks like the plant will be idle for some time. This is the second time the Screw and Bolt works employees have gone out on strike in the past six weeks. A large number of girls are employed in the worm and they are also out on strike.
