Property Owners in ManyParts of State Say Taxes Will Be Higher Than Before.

(BULLETIN.)

A masting- la being- held this after. -aeon In Hammond to protest ag-ainst tha j ctata board's assessments In North j Township. C. H. Trederlch, former sheriff Is calling1 tha meeting-. He asks every

TIMES BUREAU AT STATE CAP1TAL1 1NDIAXAPOLJS. lnd.. Aug. 2i. Now

that the State Tax Board hag amounted its readjustment of property valuations In all of the ccjuntlcs cf the state under the provisions of the new stato tax law, It will be Interesting to watch the result and note the effect on property owners. In many parts of the stato there has been much dlssatisfarti. n voiced becauso of the possdbilit y thnt valuations might be tremendously increased under the new law and that tajces would be higher than before. There has been much speculation in regard to what political effect this might have

on tfte voters of the state. No one cin

Ui: tt this timn how it will turn out. Aim li sni pi li-o was xpr s.-ed wh- n lli.' report of the na to tat board became mown, it had been reported that the hoard would miLke adjustments tk.it wiuld l' nuro nearly uniform than thosm thowii in the report. It waj thought that there would not bo such u wide datei eiic- in the pt c.-nt of ini rti.y1 la tho different counties. Tli n ii'i I hows that in one county, Carroll, the l.i. ant made a decrease in the valuation.-! id rial estate, while in oilier counties the rate of increase ranged all I lie way l'roni live per o ut to 10 jxt cent. This iaet is pointed out hero as th'-wing 1 he need for revision of the old tax law, limit r which valuations formerly were l..d. It shews, so it is said, that the variations in the various counties hud. r the old law were so nr. it that in soiue counties land owners paid more tax than they should have paid, while other countn s pant Kss than they should have paid. I'nder the new law the state tax le.ard lias sought to equalize valuations and appraisements so that property owners in ail. of tho counties will pay taxes on an equal hasis. It means an increase In some counties higher than others, but this merely helps to equalize ! he tax. bunhj!. It is well known, to), that more money must be raised by ta-;-l.tioii, b'cause of the h'.c.h prices of everytbinjf that is bought and sold nowaca vs. Close observers lore seem to think that the report of lh sta'e tax board will remove much of the objection that heretofore was voiced against the newtax law. and tint it will work out satisfactorily.

lv!,1il1.tv.",'J""U AT f'TATE CAPITAL IMH.VNAI'i 'LIS, lnd , Aug. 28. The fact that (oovernor Coodrich now has under consideration the creation and appointment of a mediation commission to act in all labor disputes and prevent strikes and disorder Is regarded here as a good sign of better conditionix in the industrial life of Indiana. The plan which was proposed by a committee representing the railroad men of the state contemplates that labor disputes may he adjusted more easily and satisfactorily throucii a process of mediation than any other way. The committee advised the Oovertior that such a (.'.an would be much better than to call out the state troops, as was done at Linton during the riots that attended the telephone strike, and at Hammond where the state forces are now guarding an industry which has a strike on its hands. Labor is opposed to the calling out of soldiers in labor troubles. The committee so informed the Governor. The members said the presence of soldiers always add fuel to the flames that cause disorder, and that it is much easier to reach an adjustment through peaceful means. They said that if a mediation board was appointed whose duty it would to attempt to settle all labor disputes a much better felling would be created. They said that if. after the board failed to effect an adjustment of the differences, disorders should follaw then would be the time to consider the idea of affording military protection.
