The thirty-eighth annual tournament for the tennis championship of the U. S. was scheduled to start here today with a galaxy of stars, representing the world' best talent ready to compete. Overcast skies early In the day. with occasional flurries of rain threatened to mar the opening, however, and the courts were still damp as a result ot hevy showers during the night. Officials of the V. S. National Lawn Tennis Association said that play would be started if possible as the schedule of matches is unusually heavy this year. Three former national title-holders Maurice McLoughlln. of Los Angeles; R. Norris Williams, II, and William M. Johnston, are among the many players who will contest for the crown now held by Robert Lindley Murray, of Niagara Falls. Lined up with these contenders are the best tennis players in the country young and old and the tourney takes an international flavor with the presence of Ichlya Kumagae, of Japan, and the recently arrived Australian quartet.

HUDSON COLTS LOSE TIGHT GAME The fast Hudson Colls lost their first game of the season to the Gary Cubs Sunday at Morris Park in ten innings of fast baseball by the score of S to 4. From the first inning when the Cubs scored one and the Colts came right back with two runs it devoloped into a pitchers' battle between Oreasbaum for the Colts and Runyon for the Cubs. Both pitchers showed that they were capable of holding up their end of the game in a very good fashion. The score was always close during sll the game with the Colts leading up to the ninth when the Cubs tied it up and won out with two runs in the. tenth. Al though Creasbaum lost his game he showed that he had a lot of stuff on the ball and knew where and when to use it. The only disagreeable feature of the rame wa sthe marked partisanship of the first umpire for the Cubs. It sure is not a good thing for a team of the Cubs' standing to carry an umpire like the first one they had Sunday. The Colts travel to Gary Froebel high school grounds Labor Day for a return tame with the Cubs and expect to return with the bacon for sure this time, it will sure be a good game which ever way it goes. If the fans would like to see a good game go to Gary Labor Day. Froebel high school grounds, and they will sure see it. The management of the Colts would like to hear from the St. Cyrils of Whiting as soon as possible so as to fixe up a little difficulty in relation to games. Will their manager please write 820 Claude 3t.. Hammond, or call 112S-M andSJeave his number so I can call him? Address lette to Claude Hudson. The Colts would also like to hear from the manager cf the West Ends of West Hammond and would like to have an answer of his leter to Griffith one way or the othfr.
