To name a f w of the many spring suspensions now in use, there are Cantilever as on the Kmjr (properly seiniollipuc cantilever): nuartvr elliptic cantilever, as on the small Ch.-v rolet : semiel'l; tie tiausvers. . as on the Kurd; doable sell', i-e! tnpin;crs make the error of supplying springs of a certain design with the result that the owner of the car soon finds out he needs shock absorbers.
It is quite possible to get alontr without fhock absorbers on many cars, bu so many hsve. at least out! bad featurethat shook absorbers are a welcome addition. There are certain oils that show line results over ordinary macadam roads, but as soon as h really roujeh road is encountered the passengers cannot keep their heats. Springs, no lpatter of what type, may Rive the owner trouble. I have received reports lately of certain makes of cms that are chronic sprint? breakers. One owner told me he replaced four right rear springs and doesn't know what is causing the trouble. In many cars with Hotchkirs drive where the proper provision is not tnaJe to take the additional stresses, spi-ln, breakage may be common. If your car Cives persistent spring trouble buy the best main leaf possible, keep the prln,i clips always tieht and the shackles free, rind with a minimum of side play. Springs reuuire lubrication just as any other parts. "While the car is ,n motion the spring leaves rub over aoh other, and therefore they should be lub-ric.it-d. Whenever a sprin-r is r-moved, and the leave;: separated, spread graphite over the surfaces. Tii-ie aw on the market some spe J .

cial constant lubricators for springs and the majority of these are good. Some are in the form of wicks properly supported ami fed from an oil well. There are spring covers hIso which ennhle lubricant already spread between the leaves to bo retained and above all prevent water from' getting in. 1 Shackles ar-i a common source of trouble. Spring sha. kh s are necossury in order that there be room for flatenin of the sprinsr wh-n the frame noes down. The shackle amounts to a free Joint between the spring- and the frame. This shackles are supported hy bolts. and if these latter are not well oiled or greased freedom of movement is re-1 strieted. While crease is not the- best lubricant for shackh- bolts, it is better than none at all. .; reuse is bad because it hardens and does not work its way to the rut'-
bing surfaces. u here possible oil cups should be substituted for grease cups. Shackles often are noisy due to side 'play. This may be caused in some designs by looseness of the bolt mid in others by wear. Where shuns are supplied it is i asy to take up the play.
