At the (lock the prince was welcomed by the Puke of Devonshire, governorgeneral of Canada; Sir Robert Borden, premier cf Canada, and a number of other hifrh officers of state. The -prince of Wales wore the uniform of a captain of the royal navy and his b!)r "white cap trade hirn a conspicuous figure among the crowd. The youthful heir took a keen and delighted interest in all that went on around him. Even when the launch which tore him from the Dragon had prated aeain-U thf wharf he leapd to his feet, and without waiting for the painter to bo made fast, and with the aMMance of a jackie. who stood rigidly at attention, leaped upon the quay. BOYISH tOOKINO. The royal standard which flew at the masthead of the Dragon and flags and banners with which the town was draped flapped limply in the wind, but in contract was the enthusiasm of the people on shipboard and ashore. The rrince is slight of figure and looks much younger than 5. He is fair-hair-d and looked like a boy as h walked up the carpeted stairway of the pier, surrounded by stalwart Canadians who towered above him. U. 8. Feature Service. LAMPS AND IiAMPSHADSS In almost every department store today women are being taught the making of lampshades; but no etore can tnach the making of artistic lampshades which harmonize with your room, however humble it be. Home life usually centers around the living room lamp; and whether It be a farmhouse or a duplex apartment, it Is important on that account. It Is not enough that one exercise Ingenuity In the manufacture of shades and care in the selection of bases. Thought muet be given to the color of paper, silk or metal used in the shade, the height of tee base end the angle at which the shade reSects the light. First there are shades made of eilk or chiffon. These are most often made in two layers, the upper one of a quiet tone harmonizing with the room and the Inner one of a bright yellow or orange in a living room, or of a blue or rose color in a bedroom. Striped silks are Interesting but must be planned carefully and placed only where they will cot add confusion to a room. Striped taffeta shades in pastel tones are charming in beoV rooms and may be finished with a rushing of the same material. For this niching the taffeta should be pinked an both edges. A champagne colored llk shade may be lined with pink, rellow, rose or orange; a buff colored sne lined with strong blue. Dead white should never be used as a lining unless a glaring white light Is desired. Cheese cloth may be used as in interlining between two thin silks ind may be need in a contracting . itade for an Interesting effect. A figured cretonne may have a layr of thin net or gauze over 1L This s especially good in a nursery. Cre.onne may be improved by several :oats of shellac. This makes It imooth and hard and gives a waterproof surface. Lampshades made of iretonne treated in this way may be ised on porches or elsewhere out of loors. Because you do not have gas or electricity yon need not be without a wetty lamp.
