F. Forbis, warned his men to be on the alert for trouble this mrntng. Today the police are on the alert and are arresting all suspicious looking negroes. John Person, a Chicago negro, was taken into custody last night at the Lake Shore depot and the fact was disclosed that Chicago colored race rioters are coming to Gary to purchase guns. TAKES FIRST VACATION IN NINE YEARS Something's g-!nir to happen or at least bhould happen. Elmer E Kagon, veteran newypaper man of Lake county is taking a vacation, the first day ofT. he has had in nine years. He has been an employe of this paper for the past eleven years and left yesterday for a two week's rest. Some day this week Elmer Is patiently awaiting the arrival of his son Forest from overseas, with wound nnd service stripes and if we are not amiss, there will be a rousing; welcome for him at the home at 80fi Harrison street. Word was received that he was expecting his discharge at Camp Sherman either today or tomorrow. His son, Chandos, was also overseas and has been discharged. But that is getting away from the story. Mr Kagnn has been in the newspaper gme during the past 40 years. He has owned papers at Atkinson. Rurwell and Scotia. Nebraska and Hammond and Lowell. The condition of Mrs. Emll Ebert of Hammond, one of two survivors of an auto-train accident which snuffed oui five lives at Merrillville Inst Saturday rtieht. one of the victims her husband an the other her 9 year old daughter. At first no hopes were held out for her recovery. Battling against odds, her vitality at low ebb. physicians are marveling at the case. She has learned that her husband and daughter Esther were killed. She and her other daughter Ruth were the only survivors of the tragedy. P.uth escaped with a few minor scratches. Gary Commercial Club to Have Spacious Ball Room Whem completed the Gary Commercial club will have one of the finest If not the largest ball room in the northern part of the state, according to the present plans. It will cover the entire floor space of the third story and an effort Is being made to have it ready for rent.il by the first part of October. Besides the spacious hall there will be adjoining rooms for lounging, ladies rest room, smoking room and a kitchenette.

"Phew," he gasped, mopping his brow, "What'll the boss say now, and I never had a word about it." He fiew to a telephone ami proceeded to get busy. "lie!', what d'vvya know about this here sugar famine they're talking about." he inquired of a number of Gary business men. "V"h:it did'Ji say? There's not going to be a suar 'famine.'' and the scribe breathed a big- sigh of relief. According to a canvass of the stores it was Irarnrd that while there is a sugar shortage there is no reason to be alarmed. With the canning season over in several wteks and the reduction of sugar exportattons abroad, there will be pltnty of sugar in thine ar future.

TRY TO WRECK TRAINS ON "J" Timely discovery of some big spikes which had been driven Into the tis near the rails by a gang of youths probably averted a wreck on the "J" according to information. Yesterday the juvenile officers took the youngsters into custody bit on account of their youth and their promise to leada d.fferent path in the future they were released.

COAL DEALERS GATHER IN GARY THIS EVENING To discuss th present coal situation, members of the Lake County Coal Dealers are urged to be present at a meeting at the Gary Commercial Club rooms this evening. Secretary R. R. Yeagley, who called the meeting Is expected to furnish some Interesting data on the coal situation.

CHANGE MADE AT RED CROSS HEADQUARTERS To fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Florence Reynard,

former secretary of the Home Service department at the Red Cross headj quarters in Gary, the services of Miss I Khoda M. Welding of Cleveland. Ohio. I has been secured. The change will

occur the first of next month. Miss Reynard has accepted a similar position at Fnion City, Ind. Miss Welding has been the field director for the home service division of the Red Cross association in Southern Indiana.

NESBIT SERVICES AT WILLIAMS' CHAPEL Funeral services over the rema'ns of Francis Nesbit, the popular Gary young man who was drowned at Miller Beach Sunday was held at Williams' chapel yesterday evening at 8 o'clock. The Rev. W. S. Seaman of the Mthodist church conducted the services. Following the services the body was shipped to the home of his parents at Van Lear, Ky.

Th many Gary friends of J. A. Crew, assistant superintendent of the blast furnaces at the Gary works of the Illinois Steel Company were surprised to learn of his resignation, which took effect last Saturday morning. With his family, ho will move his household effects to Jackson. Michigan, the home of Mrs. Crew's parents. Mr. Crew has been in the employment of the Gary Works for the past eight years.

AUTO HITS A TELEPHONE POLE Ernest Er'.ckson residing at ."SSth and Harrison in Gary was quite painfully injured yesterday afternoon when his automobile became unmanageable and crashed into a telephone pole.
