Yankees and Dodjrers stand alone as representatives of the cast. The White Sox. under Kid Gleascn. have siased a great come-back. In the National I.eaeue the Giants are closely pressed for the leadership by the Cincinnati Heds. brought suddenly to life by Pat Moran. The champion Cubs, in third place, are far from being out of the pennant hunt. Brookln. clirKing- to fourth place by an eyebrow, is closely pressed by the Pirate. Purine the present week the pennant races w lTI reach the half way point. In the. past it lias be.n the rule, rather than the exception for clubs to reach their levels by July 15. This year the exception applies for the Wh.te Sox and Giants leading their respective leagues today, have a Ions, lonfr way to go. Any one of the first division teams in either league may win the pennants. The fact is the races aro so close and so hotly contested by a number of clubs that predictions are altogether out cf order. The new strength shown by western clubs is responsible for the close races in both leagues. The races are at least

three-cornered affairs and there is promise that September will find at least two

teams in each major league racing down the home stretch, neck and neck. The Yanks and Giants have been setting a consistent pace during- th greater part of the season, yet neither club can be called an ali star aggregation. Both have weaknesses that may hold them back at any stage of the race. As the teams stand today the American league race is a toss-up between the "White Sox, Yanks and Indians. The National league pnnant-h;nt is a puzzle, with the Ileds and Giants commanding a major share of consideration and the Cubs being figured all the time. It has been rlr.e years since western clubs have monopolized the world's series, the Pirates and Tigers paying for the honors in 1909. But it is not improbable that the 1919 world's series ma v be a strictly western affair.

Tickets for the special excursion train to Joliet Sunday are soini rapidly. It is certain now that at least 500 Hammond fans will accompany the team for the big game in the train alone. Manager Nagel calls attention t the fact that the numb-r of tickets H Iir.-.ittd and those who wish to go hculd avoid waiting until the last min-ut:-as he is permitted to sell only enough fares for to nit the coaches ordered. The tickets will reniarn on sale at Mel Monnctte's cigar store until lrt.3' Saturday night. After that the rate will be raised from $2.50 to the regular fare which is about fb.UO. The excursion fare also includes admission to the game. For the iirft time thi3 season Hammond backers are finding a place for all tlv coin they wish to put up on their favorites. As Hammond's long string of homo victories grew the -visitors became more wary until it was hard to get a decent bet. The odds were becomingtoo long in Hammond's faor. As Hammond is to play her first game on a strange fir Id Sunday, Joliet is counting on having a big advantaa. It docs make a big difference but a large ging of Hammond rooters along with thu team will help' matters materially.
