cf the water prepared as directed in the first paragraph. A PARK SYSTEM FOR TWIN CITY. East Chicago's new and improved park system will be better for the Twin City than the largest factory that could be located there. The time has come when East Chicago and Indiana Harbor must prepare for the future end tha present city administration has lone recognized that fact. No city can become larce and prosperous unless its people are happy- They cannot be happy if they have set happy homes and environs. They cannot be satisfied if they have to work one place and live in another. East Chicago's leading men and In liana Harbor's boosters have long recognized that the park question and the "city beautiful" question are about as important topics as they have had to deal with, and with the solution of this problem at hand in the engineering of a new park: system for both ends of the city the latter w ill quit marking time any longer in becoming beautiful. There is no more wide awake city in the region than East Chicago-Indiana Harbor. Its factories, public buildings, civic equipment, i- -hurcho?, schools and institutions take a back seat for no one. With a new system of parks it will be possible to pay more attention to the building up of homes around them and improving those already built, fo that It will not be necessary for its people to live in Hammond or elsewhere. That is what East Chicago has long wanted and row l!it It has come, watch the Twin City grow in desirability as a residence r.s well as a factory center.

PACKERS AND BOLSHEVISTS. It may be that the big meat packers are not charging an exorbitant profit for their services they render. It may be that their purposes are patriotic and even philanthropic. It does not seem probable in view of their posti war record, but let it be granted. Nevertheless, there can te not question of the menace involved in the great and increasing power they possess over the riatlon'3 foo apply. Senator Thomas, of Colorado, in a letter to cne of the Big Five, put the matter calmly and clearly. "I have no disposition," he says, "to be unfair to 1he packers of the United States, or to any other industry. The fact, however, that you and others engaged in tha packing business are constantly increasing the domain of your activities by obtaining control of nearly every article of foo dconsumption, including a very serious invasion into the domain of the wholesals rrocer, end threatening to absorb his industry as well. Justifies the efforts of senators to do something to prevent the inevitable control of the absolute necessities of life j the representatives of a eincle industry-' He proceeds to point out the relation of such vast economic power to the evil forces now loose in society. "Nothing can justify lawlessness," he says, "but many things lead to and prompt lawlessness in its most violent and dangerous forms.
A SOUR ORANGEMAN. In an interview recently given out to th press. Sir Edward Carson, of Ulster, says: "?aaor Lodze is anx ious to whip rr.-sident Wilson wi'b any material at hand and he therefore for the moment poses as the friend of the Irish republic, although he knows well that tho Irish in Amtriia are and nearly a!was have ben on the side of the Democrats." Carson was striking at the recent resolution requesting that th Irish delegates from
United S'ates bo given a hearing at the peace conference on the subject of "self determination" for Ireland. His utterances do not indicate that ho i? correctly informed with respect to matters which have transpired in the United States striate. Senator Lode was not The origin ator of the resolution, and the resolution had a number of supporters among the president's own party. Carson will probably l-arn in lf-20 that tho Irish are not so unanimously on the sido of the Democratic party as they have hitherto bee n. So will Mr- Wilson. "Personally," continues Carson, "I resent the interference of American politicians m controversies upon this question it is no business of theirs and their meddlesome action, even if it was well irtT."ioned can oniy add to the turmoil and ferment in our country." The American people can rrsent no less the determination on the part of Great Britain to meddl in American poii'ics as ir.db afod by the Prit ish-Wilsonian leacu of nations. The American people do not believe that tho British as a people approve of tb;s determination on the
