And most of them, concluding the task, have reached this belief: "Willard in reality was twice a knockout victim In the very first round of fighting. But Dempsey was cheated cf a triumph in that initial sesion by failure of Referee Pecord to begin a count after the fourth knock-down and later by the banging of the gong." Ollie Pecord. the referee, who was jammed It. .a the officiating role by Tex Rickard, probably to ray a political bet Pecord who was forced onto the fighters Isn't the recipient of any boquets this day. Rather. Pecaord is being condemned and censured. Many there are who claim that before the fight began he executed one classic boner and then aded several more during the first round as convincing prof that' he is a ' third man" of the extremely "'crackablo" type. Pecord permitted the fight to start in full knowledge of the fact that the bell the most impor'ant bit of fistic mechanism was faulty. Its clang was so faint that it had to be banged four times in the first round before both fighters heard it and started on their battling way. And. mind you. when the bell was banged those four times, there was a hush over the audience so great that the falling of a pencil would have been audible some distance away. If Pecord had insisted upon the fixing of the bell, one of the most unusual situations in ring history would have been prevented. But Pecord didn't do anything of the sort. As & result no one heard the clanging of the bell tht ended the first round. None heard anything but the counting of Pecord over the prostrate form of Willard and none saw anything but Pecord push Dempsey back to his corner, seemingly telir.g the crowd that the fight was over end that Dempsey had won. If there had been a perfect bell in operation the press section would have heard it and the premature flashing "Dempsey wins in first round" never would have come about. But not alone did Pecord err there Toward the later part of that first round Willard was technically a knockdown victim. He was hanging helpless on the ropes with heels off the ground a position that the Marquis of Queensbury, as wel as the Toledo Boxing Com-I m.ision, ruled specifically as reason for' the refere to begin a count. But Pecord did not count. He-stood away and so did Dempsey. The latter knew that Willard's position was "down" and he didn't strike. Willard wobbled on the ropes for perhaps eight seconds and then dropped to the floor.

Then and only then did Pecord start his court. He had reached six or o when Wilard staggered back to his feet. Yet Pecord pei-mitted the fight tc go on although WiiWd really had been "out" for som 'hing like fourteen seconds. Another awful blunder came a sh'Srt time later. The ring regulations provide that th re is to be only sixty seconds of rest between rounds, yet Pecord never started the fighters for the second until two minutes and four seconds had elapsed a. delay that was of great advantage to. Willard. Perhaps the nxt time a heavyweigh: clash is staged the promoters will keep their fingers out of the refereeing pie and not attempt to foist upon a fighting public and a pair of warriors a ring man cf unknown worth in titular clashes. Th" battle is over and the wre.ths of smoke that fade away reveal many things, but nothing plainer, nothing more surprising than this fact: Jess Wiiiard was game. He quit but he was not a quitter. It is doubtful is there Is a man who lives who would take a beating like Willard took in that first round and then come back for more; it is almost beyond the fancyings of a writer of romantic fiction tales, that a man dropped siv times in less than two minutes would show courage enough to rise again ana again and present his pain-racked body for more smashing. Through the years many figured that Willard was something of a Joke as a fighter. And that was true. They reckoned, too. that he was yellow that he would quit when the first smashes began to hurt him but Jess Willard yesterday afternoon showed courage rarely if ever exhibited in a prize ring. It used to be: "Jess Willard. champion. Put now- it is: "Jsss Wiiiard. a game quy." And somehow- o rothor there should be a solace for Willard in the possession of that newer title a testimony to hi. manhood. Rests With Man to Accomplish.
