HOUSEWIVES PROTEST TO CONGRESS

Investigation To Be Started Soon In Answer to Complaint.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS StRVICd WASHINGTON, June 26. Housewives protests against the high cost of living arc reaching congress In such, numbers that an investigation

as being planned today.

Senator Asle Gronna, of North Dakota, chairman of the senate agricultural committee, staled today that another probe of the packing industry would be underjjen by his committee as soon as appropriation bills are out of the way. The Hendrick bill providing for government regulation of the packers, will be made the vehicle for the Investigation, which will be broad In its scope and include not only an inquiry into the cost of meats, but will Include other foodstuffs. The Kcnyon bill, which also is before Congress, provides' for regulation of large firms dealing in foodstuffs and hearings on this bill, will be in the nature of a general probe of food costs. That there is a movement throughout th country among housewives for governmental steps to reduce the cost of living is evident from the large number of protests being received eah day by the members of congress. Senators and representatives are now fllooded with letters asking that an investigation be made and these letters have come In such numbers that their presure is being felt. The proposed investigation will extend not only to the large packing firn"3 which have been investigated before by congress and other governmetal departments, but . will also include some of the smaller Arms. The recently formed combine or association of independent packers will come under the inquiry, it was stated.

PUBLIC IS ENTITLED TO PROTECTION Indianapolis Judge Sets Precedent for FiftyOne Indiana Cities.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES1 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.. June 27. Officials of the bureau of venereal diseases operated by the Indiana State Board of Health in co-operation with fhe United States Public Health Service are, pleased with the ruling of Acting Judge Sims, of the Indianapolis city court, which sustains the contention of the bureau that the public is entitled to protection from carriers of venereal disease germs. Judge Sims assessed a fine of Jl and costs and added six months on the state penal farm ia each of three cases wherein violation of the ordinance directed to the control and eradication of the venereal diseases was alleged and proven. It was the first case of the kind in Indiana and is expected td serve as a precedent In each of the ftfty-ona cities where a similar ordinance has been enacted. Judge Sims, in response to an appeal by a representative of the bureau and of the

r.dianapolis City Board of Health,

agreed to suspend the sentences in each case conditional upon the three guilty men subjecting themselves to treatment at the free clinic, and maintaining i quarantine so Ipng as they continue infectious. To this they agreed and officials of the bureau were requested by the Judge to report any delinquency, which will be the signal for the enforcement of the sentence.
