ago It was stated that some of the suffragists had sent letters to the members of the house and the senate asking them if they would be willing to come to Indianapolis, if necessary, to attend a special session and pay their own expenses, in order to save that expense to the state and at the same time to get around the objection that a special session would be expensive. Among all of those that have answered that question thus far, only two have refused to do so. All of the others, it is said, have offered to come and pay their own expensts. However, since the governor has decided to call the special session, this will not be necessary, for the state will pay the cost of the session. OTHER LAWS NECXSSABT. It has been known for some time that the governor would like to have a special session of the legislature, but that he hesitated to call it because he could not assure himself as to what kind of program that body might mant to carry ut. It was known that there were other subjects besides woman suffrage that the governor hoped the legislature would consider at the special session, and he was not sure whether it would do it or not. There must be some changes in the election laws to meet the woman suffrage situation. There are also some kinks in the highway laws that tht governor hopes to have straightened out. And. above all. the state institutions are sorely in need of larger appropriation for the coming two years. The legislature at Its recent session was entirely too economical for the good of the institutions, and the only way that this condition can be remedied row Js by the calling of a special session to give them more money. Thtse and the woman suffrage prorosltion are the subjects that the governor and the Republican party leaders are hoping the legislature will handle and then quit. But will the legislature follow that program? There are some who incline to the belief that the legislature may not confine itself to th'.s program, but that it may go even further and do a lot of other things. There is no way in the world to limit the legislature as to what it may do or not do at a regular or special session. Neither is there any way to limit the length of the session, although the governor, in an interview, has stated that the srecial session should not last over a week. If thre was nothing else) to be done besidts the ratification of the woman suffrage amendment, this could be accomplished In one day. But the other subjects, together with the fact that a speaker of the house, must be elected before anything else can be done, will consume a lot of time and string the session out to several days length. By accepting the appointment as chief of the state board of accounts. Jesse Esehbach. speaker of the house at the last several sessions, eliminated himself from membership in the house and thus made it necessary for the members to elect a new spa.ker.
