Not having played in last Sunday's game Buckeye still maintains his lead with a percentage of .623. Field Manager "Chuck" Ithode. who filled in at first base in place of Thompson, who was laid up with tonsilltis, forged his way to second place by getting 2 blows in 4 times at bat for a .500 average. This was Chuck's first game in the Chicago League and aside from the fact that he was there wielding the stick, he also played nifty game around the first sack. When he scooped two bad throws out of the dirt with men on the bases he looked like Rhode of old. who used to be a star performkr at the initial corner In the days of the famous Joe Long -Colts and the old Hammond Hubbards. More power to you Chuck and here is hoping that you get the chance to pull some more fielding stunts and crack out plenty base Jilts before
the season is over, so that the fans may'
appreciate your real worth to the team as an all around utility man. Another surprise in the averages is Callahan, the. foxy little second baseman, who is considered one of the brainiest players on the club. In the last two games this smart hitter, who is continually working on a pitcher while at the plate, has passed both O'Neil and Walsh and is now In third place with an average of .455. Callihan has been at bat less than any other man who has played in the same number of games and this for the reason that he has succeeded in working opposing pitchers for 3 passes and has made a couple of sacrifice hits. He also stol 2 bases, but the leader in this departmet is "Herman" Blank, our quiet little thirdbaseman, who keeps plugging away and looks mighty good on the sacks. Blank has been hitting in rough luck and Just as soon as he starts getting a little better breaks he will be right up among the top notchers. O'Neil and Kennedy are staying right up with the leaders and if the pepperyshortstop will keep up his gait of last Sunday, when he got 2 blows out of times up, he will soon be in the .309 class, where he rightfully belongs. Although Walsh has dropped to .256 in the last two games, you can bet your dough that the old reliable who culd be counted on In a pinch in the days of Pete Henning when Hammond won the City League title, will be there strong at the finish. The same can be ald ef Callan. who promises to come with a rush and when he does look out for base hits galore. On next Sunday Hammond p!ays the strong Hawthorne club with "Meatball" Joe Benz of White Box fame doing the pitching and Tommy Asmussen the receiving. Dick Cantwell, known to Hammond fans, as one of the best semi-pro hurlers In "the Chicago League is the second string pitcher. Buckeye and the rest of the Ham' mond players say bring on the much touted rals who have been burning up the league as the locals are ready.

TAGGING ALL THE BASES By JACK VEIOCK I. N. S. Sporti Editor
EDDIE COLLINS hit one of the shortest home-runs on recorci during the White Sox off the Tanks. The ball struck the turf ten feet behind the inflelrl but Virk's snxi"ty to mako a shoestring catch let it roll to the bleacher fence.
CICOTTE ran up his tenth victory in eleven games. ERNIE SHORE had walloped the "White Sox eleven times in 15 gams prior to yesterday. Then the thing happened. 'THE Red Sot won a costly victory over the Tigers as Babe Ruth, -while sliding back to third base, wrenched a kne and had to be carried from the field. AS an emergency pitcher Eller waltzes beautifully. He fnt in to relieve Bressler when the bases were intoricated. and proceeded to walk the batter. Finch-hitter Schultz. forcing in demons with the' sole but winning run. WHILE the Athletics were walloping tha Indians, Witt, fhe Mackroan left fielder drew four singles and a triple In five times up. WALTER JOHNSON had one of his old time days, so the Browns got but four scattered hits. HANK GOWDT was the main attraction during the exhibition game staged by the Dodgers and Braves at Buffalo while these two teams are on thir way
westward . COBB only got one hit yesterday, a triple, therefore he Is leading the American League hitters with a percentage of .385. Cobb is going back back for another American League batting honor. Cravath. the Phillie slugging demon, is atop the swatters of that league with the cute little average of .450.
DEFEAT TIGERS. Owing to the fact that the Calumet Colts failed to appear Decoration Day the East Chicago Dodgers did not play but made up for it Sunday by defeating the South Side Tigers of East Chicago. g-4. The features of the game was the pitching of Alex Sitnicz who had to h's credit thirteen strikeouts and fielding of W. Quinn who in th" eighth inning with the bases full ran 10 feet for the
ball and managed to get his glove under it and then throw it to second which was an easy for our ever-awake second baseman. J. Whalen. to get and make a double out. The rest of the team did very good. The Dodgers would like to book a game with Dyer and also St. Johns of Whiting. Call 733-W between 6 and 6:30 p. m. Ask for Michael.
