HERE'S PROGRAM FOR DECORATION

AN INVITATION. The parents of oil Hammond men who died In the aerrlee In the "World AVar are requested to participate In the Memorial Day exercises. Automobiles will be provided to transport tbem to and from. the cemetery In the parade. They will meet at the court house on Rlmbacb avenue at nine o'clock. Final arrangements for Hammond's. Memorial Day celebration, the biggest affair of Its kind ever held in the county, were made yesterday evening at the meeting: of the Soldiers and Sailors club. The committee, composed of members of the G. A. R.. S. W. V.. and American Legrion had arranged practically everything and only a few matters remained for the Soldiers and Sailors club to settle.

The G. A. R. appointed Commander Edward Weeks as marshal of the day and deputies appointed were Herbert E. Granger of the Spanish War Veterans and Ray Seeley of the American Legion. The marshals will be mounted and will haave charge of the parade. The first division of the parade will be composed of school children, lodges and the various organizations which have been Included in the gen- " eral invitation to participate. This division will form on Russell st.. facng Hohman street, and will be headed by the Hammond police and the Masonic Drum Corps. The second division will contain the rand Army. Woman's Relief Corps, Spanish War Veterans, American Legino, Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Salvation Army and the parents of Hammond men who died In the World War. The second division will form on Rimbach avenue, facing Hohman street. It will be headed by a band and will move out about 500 yards behind the' first division when the march to the cemetery begins. Promptly at o'clock the first calJ for formation of the parade will be sounded and at 9:30 o'clock sharp the jrarade will start for Oak Hill cemetery. There the services will be brief consisting of the usual decoration of soldiers' graves. The Home Guard, which will act as color guard in the parade will furnish the firing squad

The firing squad will fire a military salute over graves of soldiers in cemetery. The cannon will be fired on Hohman street, west of cemetery, by the (.?. A. R. The Relief Corps will decoiate the graves of all soldiers found in cemetery. On the return march to Liberty Hall the same order will prevail. On reaching the Hall the autos will be parked on Rimbach avenue in charge of the police. All persons participating with autos will unload as quickly as possible and take their place in the Hall. On the stage will be the band, speakers, committees, G. A. R. Spanish-American. American Lgion, Boy Scouts, Relief Corps three of each commttee. The- speakers will be Major General Wm. H. Haan. our guest for the day; Rev. Thomas Bassett, Col. LeGrand T. Meyers and others. Interest continues to grow in the probable action to be taken by the Hqjximond council next week when they are to appoint a new member of the Board of Education. The proposition of placing a woman on the board is one which will undoubtedly be brought up by several aldermen who are attempting to line up the other members of the council for the move which they believe will be the most

progressive step taken In connection

with Hammond educational affairs In years. Mayor Brown says he has not looked Into the matter thoroughly but he believed that It would not be legal for

a woman to hold the office of trustee. This will be investigated before the

matter ls'brought up Tuesday evening. Thomas Harle, Hammond labor leader, is strorgly In favor ol the appointment of a woman. In discussing the, subject today he said, "The women are interested as much as or more than the men In the education of the children. The nation is progressing rapidly and the women 'are coming to the front more and more. I am sure that a woman on the board couldn't do much worse than some of the men wa have had on it." Another prominent business man said that he was not sure whether a, woman was the solution of Hammond's troubles but If a. man is selected he should be a good one. He admits that when given a show the women have demonstrated their ability In many lines, he said. "They certainly showed that there are some pretty good poli

mond." About the only thing that causes men to ho!U back seems to be the fact that It Is an unusual thing for women

to hold such positions of responsibility

around Hammond, but as one man puts

it. "They are going to get the ballot

soon anyway and when they do they

are going to place women In those Jobs

themselves. In fact It would not surprise me to see a lot of offices occupied by women when they have their lay.'
