Potato Leaf Hopper Killed byBlack Leaf 40

fSPECIAL TO THE TIMES CTTOWN PolXT, May 2 i. Indications are favorable in Indiana for an outbreak of plant lice this year. Potato growers as well as other Vegetable producers should be on the watch for small green soft bodied insects usually found on the under side of the young leaves. Their presence usually causes a foiling under of the leaves, thus serving as a protection for them. Soon the Ju.ce is sucked from the leaves, resulting in withering, browning and finally death. Plant lice multiply so rapidly that ar.y control measures applied must be begun when the first lice appear. Thorough spraying with a niaotine svilphate Plack Ieaf 40) solution, taking care to completely cover both tides of the leaves, will destroy the iiee. It may be necessary to apply two or three applications ten days apart to completely rid the plants of tha pests. Nicotine Sulphate should be used at the rate of one-half pint to 50 gallons or one teaspoonf ul to the gallon. It ma bi added to Bordeaux with lead arsenate. Such a combined spray controls potato bugs, plant lice, leaf hoppers and certain fungous diseases. V. A. FLACK, County Agent.

In the 1914 road race at Elgin. De Alenfe blew a tire just before, reaching the grandstand. The car skidded and lurched crazlly along the narrowroad, but through an exercise of superhuman skill, 'coupled -with marvelous luck. De Alene managed to prevent it from crashing into the towering structure. When the car finally came to a stop in front of the pits, a sigh of relief welled from the throat of every spectator A few Inches more to the right, and the lives of fifty bystanders would have ' heen blasted out of existence.
