STATE TAX BOARD IS CRITICIZED
(Continued from page one.)
it was represented to the board that the roads were links between Gary and East Chicago, Hammond and Chicago and that the roads were very much needed because of heavy industrial traffic between the cities. Chairman Sims explained that the roads were to be built under the three-mile road law and that no one outside of Calumet and North townships would be obliged to pay for the roads. CKAOTJN IN A DENIAL. Mr. Cragun, who heard the petitions, said that the board denied the. three southern Lake county roads because those who presented the case for the roads did not lay as much r tress on the necessity for the southern roads as on the necessity for the northern roaJs. He said it was represented to the board that there are other good roads in the southern part of the county and there seemed to be no immediate necessity for the spending of a lot of money for new roads in that part. He paid that the northern road bonds were approved only because of the industrial and commercial necessity. Complaints from southern Fake county folk that Senator Nedjl. who Is contractor for one of the roads for which bonds were permitted to be issued, had something to do with the situation, were met by Chairman Sims with the remark that the board knows nothing about who contractors for roads are to be and that Senator Nedjl never appeared before the board on behalf of any road. The complaint. It is understood, is a P,rt of a feeling which exists between southern and northern Lake county folk. There are many improved roads in the north part of the county near the industrial centers, on which, it is reported, southern county folk have paid taxes and the southern folk complain also that some of the northern roads heretofore improved at great eucpense are little needed or used. They have said that the roads were built for the benefit of contractors rather than for the people.
