The company has fertilized, plotx ed. toli-d and cultixated the Rround lyine between the raihoad tracks ar.d the. continuation of nnsy 1 ania axenue. This ground xxas a short t:mo ago only a sandy bottomed sxxamp; today it is a reclaimed garden spot xxiih a coon, thick coating; of black la-i. Nine acres havs already been recla mod and this x' i!! shortly be increased to fifteen acres. The garden plots are twenty by about one hundred and fifty feet. J-"if tj -five plots have been assign-d to dte and xxith Hie additional acreaage this number v. iu be increase:! to one-hundred The last cf thos-e plots prepared at present xvas taken tins xveek; this ready response of employees to the opportunity srixen them is the bert of exidenci of their having realized that the offer is a good thing. All that us required of an enirlojee to pet one of the plots is to make an apI licaticn for it. The xxixes and children cf tniployes may be seen daily seeding and caring: for their pardons. Th" Civic t.'luh is indeed glad to find this rendition existing. Aside from the material benefit to the employee and hia family in fresh xeicefables at only th expense of their labor is that other inestimable benefit of contentment and co-operation. Such a spirit ia a b:'s step in becoming: Americanized. But the story doesr't stop here. The company has given a south of beauty to this stretch of ground by placing a row of shade tiees on each side of the elegantly curved drixe that bounds the gardens on the south. And the company has not forgj'ten the young employee without a family cither. East of the drive a regulation sized ball park
has been carefully laid out. This repeat ion is not denied the married men, to be sure, but naturally the larger numbers aciixely participating will be ihe cune fellows. Ioubt!ess the married men and their families vx ill be enthusiastic fans a: the Saturday afternoon tames cf the Calumet industrial Base Tall League, pari of which will be pla -ed at the riuff'.r.gton ball park. Next Saturday afternoon the L'nixersal boys play 11. e boys of the Standard Ste'.l Car Works at the liuff niKton f ounds. The noon hour Is a real recreational period. Outdoors in nice weather after they liaxe lunched in the xxell ordered dining room one sees the boxs piax ing baseball: Indoors one may see the office forces, both men and womn, aim others that xxi:h to be there, all enjoying a musical program consisting ef instrumental solos, vocal solos and chorus singing. To the Universal must be given much credit for the successes attained by the public r.ght schools in Indiana Harbor daring the last two years. Last year six complete classes xx ere organized at the plant and sent to the. Ttiley school. More xxould have been sent had the night school not been closed so eaily m the year. It was Mr. Soderquist who caused the niht schools to be resumed this spring. Every encouragement is being given foreign employes to take advantage of this opportunity to learn the American tongue. This work ail has the good xvill and best wishes of the Chicago offices of the company. The Universal Portland Cement Company Is making some cement at Buffington, but vxe are delighted to be. in a position to say that the company is making good Americans at the same time.
