WILL HAYES GOVERNOR CANDIDATE (Continued from page one.) the way of an announcement before this time is whether Hays can run for governor and at the seme time serve as national chairman, but this appears to have ben put out of the way by the conferences that were held here and by assurances that have come from politicians elsewhere in the country. It is said that they have informed Tndiajos
Republican leaders that It will be all right for Hays to run for governor provided Indiana will lend him to the national committee for national chairman In 1910. They insist that the brand of pep and ginger that Hays has injected into the national organization since he bncme national chairman in February, 1?j8. is the kind that is ieo, uired to make a winning campaign, and lhat thnational organization should not be deprived of bis services as national chairman merely in order that he might run for goerne.r in Indiana. So, it is conceded that in case Hays announces himself as a candidate for the governorship he will not forfeit his job as national chairman. With that question out of the way, there seems to be noihing rise to prevent Hays from landing the nomination. As stated above, there are several other
well-known and able Republicans in In-i dians who would like to be governor, but the movement in favor of Hays has made such progress and taken such a deep root that there is little liklihood that any of them will announce agajnst him. Another ibing that has developed mi of the recent conferences that were held here is thnt Governor Goodrich is said to have asked Senator Watson to make the speech in the Republican national convention in 1920 placing the Governor in nomination for president. This is taken as settling the question as to whether the Governor will be candidate for president or vice president. For some time It wes Cue belief among politicians that he would sek the vice presidential nomination, and in some quarters his nsme was hooked up with that of Major General Leonard Wood, the latter for president and the Governor for th e second place. A story came out of j Washington only a few days ago statingthat this was th blown-in-the-bottle ticket that was ail but agreed on by the leaders. But the report that the Governor has asked Senator Watson to p!ae him in nomination for president brushes aside that ticket as a possibility, if the Governor adheres to his present plan. Whether Senator Wa.tson sgreed to maki the nominating speech is not known at this time, and ft will be Interesting- to learn what his answer to the invitation will be.
