Hi
It is to their credit, however, that few publishers are fooled into givlnjc up space to the press agent who is boosting some petty litle game. Thera is a growing suspicion in many newspaper oftfees, though, that the press agent has a big part in creating the' white papr shortage. The reams of paper that he grinds into copy on his t runty '"mill" would print entire editions of many newspapers. The average editor regards printing the press agent's Muff much as he would if a shoe dealer were to take a pair of shoes from his shelf and present them to a stockholder in an oil company. Press agents, like other fad, may die off seme day. Not however, until Ireland gets home rule, and a home it; provided for rheumatic ukclele players. Fut until then we will probably have with us the press agent, and will have to tolerate him with every incoming mail. The only consolation editors have is that the reverse side of the press agent's copy makes excellent scratch paper in these days of Tl. ('. L. But. what does the press hound care? He draws a salary that makes that of the eagle-eyed editor who scorns to use his copy ork like a 30-rent beefsteak, smokes 50-cent cigars, and when his dally grind of two hours or thereabouts is done rolls home in" his PollsPack. ON ORDERS FROM JAPAN. According to news dispatcher, the strike of laborers in the sugar industry in Hawaii was brought about by orders from the Japanese Federation of I-abor. Perhaps this is just an effort to give America a sort of gentle introduction to the Wilsonian plan of having American labor controlled by foreign br&ses under the League of Nations.

THE PRESS AGENT. Thanks to the war we have with us more than fver the press agent. A press agent may be defined as a newspaper man who has left his profession in order to make more money writing stuff that maks life mis-n-a'ole for his former associates in the news room. i're.s agents sprans up during the war along with
the nfv millionaires, and now their tribe is increasing j usurped grabbed.

Newspapers were found j And then ten lines farther on he says; to be such easy suckers that a new presa agent is J "They have no status that is not. cenferred." i -Male every minute to use valuable white paper and j in his agility as a mind-changer. Woodrow Wilson t lcn valuab'e .-pace from unsuspecting publishers. I ns a close competitor. Probably never in his multiIt must be great to be a press agent. Instead of udious conflicting writings did President. Wilson ever having to grab a bunch of copy paper and ad venture j contradict himself within a space of ten fines. First, into the city in search of news, the prss agent sits j Mr. Klvthe asserts that political bosses have no st.andbebind a typewriter in a comfortable office and turns ling that, they have not grabbed, and then he says they ut copy from bulletins and reports furnished him j have no status that is not conferred. In one instance by the third assistant secretary to the fourth vice j he represents the politicians as taking power, and in .resident of the company he works for or takes notes !, the other he says that their rower is civen to th
from the secreary of the 'committee' he represents. 'ire .'oh. eh? There are divers kinds of press agents, but the
"ents may be roughly divided into two classes those.!
who work for. a corporation and those who are emplcyed by son.e " movement."' Nearly all trust compnnies and railroad corporations employ men to prel .irf opy explaining the growth, development and pol- :''!" of their various corporations. This copy is nothing less than advertising and fills the editors' waste i n. f V f t s . The second class of press agents represent some "movement which ailms at the upbuilding of somehitS 'W other or securing theindependence of some 'it' nation .or obtaining special privileges for the ' Fock-ry For The Prevention of Something or Other." tVp" prepared by these press agents is if not advertising pure and simple propaganda, and the pub-!i'-her who cares more about securing concessions for th Hottentots, lowering the duty on rubber heels to Armenia, or helping the demopublican party to success m that all the politicians can get more pie, is not a business man, to say the least.

Substitutes Often Worthless It is a well-known fact that Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound is the most successful remedy for woman's ills obtainable. Actually thousands of women have proved this to be true. Notwithstanding, some women make the mistake of trying something else, said to be just as good, simply because it is new.
