knows that one of America's be.n loved potts, James
ilussell Iyowell, also was born on February Und, and that this year marks the hundredth anniversary of his birth. In honor of this occasion the American Academy of Arts and Sciences has arranged an AngliTAmerican celebration to bo held in New York City. It is felt that this is an especially happy lime for the ceremony. Many Englishmen of letters are coming to pay their tribute alons; ith American playwrights and authors to the great man who for five -years of his life, as ambassador to England, did much to strengthen the bond of good will between the United States and the mother country. In sneaking of the friendship of the two countries. William Sloans, chancellor of the academy, says: "In
I a laree measure the efficiency of our oo-nrdlnatiiin has
been due to the common speech." Our nation has had no finer representative of that common speech in it? purest and most beautiful form than Lowell. But for all his Rifted speech he lacked nothing of forceful Ameri canism and practical citizenship. It is fitting that this centennial of his birth should be observed not only with pride by his own countrymen, but as an occasion for cementing more closely the pood feeling between th? other great English-speaking nation and our own.

In America, where women are classed with nonTotin? idiots, Indians and children, little boys learn contempt for women easily enough. To permit them as children to assist in arresting the mothers of other boys, and thus develop early their contempt for women, is rank stupidity, and brutalizes them unnecessarily.
THE POOR CALF SKINNER. Consider the poor, down-trodden calf skinner likewise the equally poor and equally down-trodden boner of chucfe. diligently plying his trade at the Chicago stockyards, and the boner of chuck by diligently wielding a wicked cleaver at the same place can earn bu a mere trifle of but here are the official figures: Carl Meyer, attorney for the packers at the recent wage hearing before Judge Alschu'.er, produced pay ouehers showing the calf skinner received for fifty-six hours' work $112. while the chuck boner received $74 for a sixty-two hour week. Of interest to the general public was the prediction of Mayer thai as demobilization continues large quantities of food released by the government for civilian consumption will bring the present peak prices for food tumbling down to within the reach of the man less fortunate than the poor, down-trodden lamb skinnr and boner of cfcucV
treatment and prevention of disease. In this connection a pamphlet (Public Health Bulletin No. &Si has recently been issued, under the title of "Health Almanac for 1919," which is of unusual interest and value because of the unique manner in which it presents, in connection with the calendar, timely and valuable information and suggestions for the preservation of health. In the introductory statement of the bulletin mentioned the head of the bureau, the Surgeon General, emphasizes the fact that " it is the patriotic duty of every loyal American to keep well." People are accustomed to feel that whether they are sick or well is a matter which is nobody's business but their own. when in fact it is a matter which vitally concerns the public, since sick people are not only a menace to the health of others but they ate a direct public burden because they produce nothing and consume the time of the physicians, nurses, and orhcrs who minister to them. Of course illness sometimes afflicts people ihroueh no fault of their own and such invalids are not subject to censure for their condition; however a very large
percentage of human diseases are easily preventable, i turned
and it is just as clearly a patriotic duty for people in all such cases to keep out of the sick bed by obeing :he laws of health as it is for them to keep out of jail by obeying the laws of the land.
