WANTS

NEW

PARKS NOV

Now Is the Time for City to Make Purchase of Acreage and Gather in Some Unimproved Land. Th City of East Chicago ncedo a !.:rgor park acreage. This fuct is genTally recognized and has bt vn very f:i"rably considered by members of tlie 'ark board and the common council for mmuo lime. Never before in the history of the city h" the time been favorable for the purchase of the acreage that the city re.ilneeds. The corporation has been continually bonded to its limit and there h.'ts been no way to make the purchase? !' land needed white that land was on i ie m&rUet r.t comparatively small money. It is believed by rjome, however, that he time hnd come when the city should acquire unimproved pieces of land to 'rovldo for the pleasures and recreations of future generations. Tt is true that the city already has rnrfcs that are unimproved and on first 1'ioupht it mlgrht Reein greater wisdom ' " Improve what we already have rather Mian to acquire more acreage. The fal"ncy of this plan becomes at once apparent when one stops to think of the increase in property valuations every year .-nd of the possibility of losinK for all t:ne some of the sites that are availr.btn now. ' The chr.mber of commerce of East 'hicago and Indiana Harbor has expressed Itself on this proposition and "early a j car a 30 recommended that a rark be purchased on the north side f the west end of the city. They are r.Iso in favor of the expansion of Kosciusko park and of provision for the nitimate expansion and improvement of 'he Lake Front park at Indiana Harlor. There has als. been some talk "? securing: land for the erection of a icntral fire station at Calumet. The city as a whole has a very small -j'.rk acreage compared to its ropula'ion. It is well known that this ration :s way below the ration that exists in

nit progressive cities. It Is believed

that th city administration, for Uie first time in Its history, 1b in shape to make needed provision for the futur along this line. Action cannot be taken any too soon. It is understood that a number of the counellmen are In favor of petting Into this matter and of doing: all that Is possible taking everything into considerat Ion. J. K. Reppa. city controller, has gono over the annual report lor UtR and has made an estimate of about what shape the city would be in during the next two or three years. From his figures. It looks as if the city could swing a proposition of moderate slti-i without apy material embarrassment. The council meets next Monday evening and It Is probable that sum' consideration will be given to this question.

CHAMBER

OPPOSES CO. UNIT BILL

The chamber of commerce of Ka$t .'hicago does not look with favor upon the county unit bill for the construction f highways unless it Is modified hy lleard.sley' amendment so that the system of highways proposed in the county may be rainied by vole of the people. The bill gives the county commissioners power to improve the roads of my township at the expenso of the county at large. In some counties, so members of the chamber think, this may he necessary where the value of the land s too low to permit of improvement at the township's expense. But in Iike county this condition does not exist. The farmers In southern 1-ake county are among the most prosperous classes l:t the county and arc abundantly able to build their own roads. Just why North and Calumet townships, with their large valuation, should bear the. largert part of the expense in the construction of roads in the southern part of the county does not seem altogether fair to the members of the East Chicago chamber. Consequently, at their last meeting, they went on records as opposed to the bill becoming a law in Its present form.

HlWTIN'iTOX Samuel E. Cook, the president of the Munting-Erle-Michl-gan Canal Association, has called a meeting of persons interested In waterways to be held here, this evening.
