nond because of the election of a member of the school board than there is over the election of a mayor. Why Because the board of education is a political body. When F- D. MrElroy. principal of the Hammond High
School, refused to sign a diploma for Mollis Hunter ten !
? ears after he had left school with a deanciency of study ciedus. he did what any honest principal would do. ft develops that Mr. Hunter never asked for the diploma. He is honest in the position ae takes and loses not a whit in the esteem in which he is held by the people of Hammond. Yet Mr. Hunter admits that he has the moot ditiioraa. He says it was given to him. Now what the people of Hammond wou'.d like to know is this. By "s-hat right and by virtue of whose authority was the diploma, which he had not earned and which he says he never isked for, given to Mr. Hunter ten years after he left school? One of the speaker? at the meeting last night termed he McElroy affair a newspaper controrersy. There is ibsolutely no newspaper controversy about it. It is a -ontroversy between the people of Hammond and the board of education. The people of Hammond bare a "itrht to be heard in the matter of Mr. McElroy and they going to be heard- The school board of Hammond -irizices this paper for printing the news, on the ground that such publication is detrimental to the schools of
Hammond. The school board of Hammond seems to be pretty powerful, but it has not acquired any right to say what this newspaper shall print and what it shall not print in the way of news. The people of the city of Hammond have woke up.

every man in the American army write a postcard Immediately to his people. The assumption, we suppose, is hat these cards will be promptly delivered. But the fault has not been with the soldiers, who have all the while been writing, correctly says the Indianapolis News. Tt is not with the army, which has nothing to do with the handling of the mail. It must be looked for in the two administrate departments at home postof flee and war. Unless there is improvement, great and sudden the postcards written In conformity with Pershing's or der will share the fate of the other mail.
Probably no one will eer know the unhappiness !
?nd distress that have been caused by the flagrant mismanagement of this most important, business. The American people' were not. and are not now. unreasonable. They understand that war K?'ea a difference, and 'ha; with men moving about from uue part of France to another, and with the disorganization of the steam.-hip service, delay and confusion were inevitable. But there has been no improvement. Rather things have grown worse since the signing of the armistice. The cable as
