tlon that It might concentrate much rower in the state commission, and take

a coaresponding amount of power from

the county commissioners. Only a few expressed themselves. Carlin H. Shank, of Marlon county, said he had "talked with some one who had talked with the Governor." and had

learned that It ts proposed to place

about 3,000 miles of highway under the state highway commission. It looked to Shank as If a "one-man highway law" were intended. He referred to the "defeat" of that plan two years ago through the activity of the commissioners. If the inheritance tax were used for state highways. Shank said those taxes would be lost to counties that did not get a state road. Then John H. Claussen, of Crown

! Point, made known his objections. It

was proposed to improve twelve miles of the Lincoln highway in Lake county, he said, and L. H. Wright, chairman of the. state highway commission, said it would cost $370.00. "We county commissioners can build it for less than $300.00." Claussen said, and he went on to argue that the state highway commission law was not a good one. if! it cost more. SHAJTK &ES1TKZS ATTACK. Shank then resumed the attack. Federal aid "looks awful good to lots of people," he remarked, and added that a corps of engineers and three automobiles of the state highway commission would soon eat up all the federal aid. Shank said he was for a state highway law if the counties are to say what county roads shall be tuilt and what they shall be built of. Joseph G, Hayes, another Marion county commissioner, evidently felt that the discussion was becoming prejudiced, for he said there must be state supervision to get trunk lines. He thought if there were more harmony in the road program "we will get farther with it." John Spangler, county attorney of Pulaski county, said he was opposed to the state highway commission bill as drawn two years ago and until he knew the terms of the new bill proposed, his oppo-

I cannot describe the look I had on rny face but I am giving good odds that it was far from natural. I crawled under cover as far as I could and decided to take a little rest before going any further in the open. I laid there for a minute or two and was about to start n;ain and raised myself up slightly, to see how much farther I had to go and not ten feet in front of me were four I'rities coming diretly toward me. I started banging at them as fast as the 'gat would 6hoot. I got one and wounded one but the other two got away. I only had two clips (16 rounds) and when I changed clips I fired one round from the sccoud clip when the d thing Jammed, caused by dropping the clip in the sand. "I stood up and took one good look at the bridge which was O. K. and started back. I went about 3 or 4 paces when suddenly a machine gun opened up on me. I flopped down again and rolled Into a ditch that was close by and waited until he stopped. All this happened within ten minutes but it seemed like three or four hours. Sins, home, friends and a German prison camp all entered my mind at the same time. I finaly got back to the front lines and stayed there until the shelling quieted down. He was shelling the reserves at the time. "The next day I was called out as a

This done, I came back and laid down with my head not two inches from the Lieutenant's heel and he was shot through that same heel. I thought I was hit at first, but the bullet rierclng his heel dislodged some dry mud which struck me in the face and gave me a little scratch on my cheek but I am still well and waiting for the next 'stunt' to be pulled off. The appalling- ravages or Spanish Influenza in this country are perhaps best realized by the statement recently made, that more deaths have resulted in little more than a month from this disease than through our whole eighteen months participation In the battles of the European War. Our greatest danger now. declare authorities, is tho great American tendency to forget easily and to believe the peril in over. Competent authorities claim the coming of cold weather is verv apt to bring return of this disease anil ihere should be no let-up throughout the winter months of the following easlly observed precautions, remembering thai Influenza is far easier to prevent than ure. Influenza is a . crowd disease. Avoid crowds as much as possible. Influenza germs spread when ignorant or careless persons sneeze or cough without using a handkerchief. Cover up each cough or sneeze. I"o not spit on the floor, sidewalk, in street car or public places. Avoid the use of common drinking cups and roller towels in public places. Breathe some reliable germicidal and antiseptic air to destroy the germs that do find lodgement in your nose and throat. Remember. no safer precaution against Influenza could be employed in this manner than to get from the nearest drug store a complete Hyomei Outfit consisting of a bottle of th Pure oil of Hyomei and a little vest-pocket hsnl rubber inhaling device, into which a few drops of the oil are poured. You should carry this Inhaler about with you during the day and each half hour or so put it in your mouth and draw deep breaths of its pure, healing germ killing air into the passages of your nose, throat and lungs, . By destroying germs before they actually begin work in your blood, you may make yourself practically immune to infection. All these suggestions about Spanish Influenza are equally true in th prevention of colds, catarrh of nose and throa'. bronchitis and even rneumonia. Ion't become careless. Do you part.
