THe Farmer and Reconstruction
By T. PX.ACB (County Agent.) 'f you win take a moment to look ack into the history of the Mtur doesn't it secm ihut now. tha lltne , PrnP for meeting the farm problems that must come with the remakof worldl which process we are now generally calling- reconstruction. The American farmer was called tipon to feej t,,,, worM ,le did it He is now called upon to keep it up for at least t,Vo years yet. He will do ". but now what recognition as a l-adin( basic industry is farmins BoinK to have at the end of that time if ach farmer Is standing alone? The farmer of this country mti not Bt so bMsy producing foodstuffs to feed Germany and her gang that they win have no time to look after their own interests in a combined way go a to receive the recognition that thev rightfully deserve. Previous to the world war ur farmr sold their cropa with their soil elements and their labor, thrown in at a price which anany times did not pay cost of production, to say nothing of long houra of labor and depletion of soil fertility. With tha reshaping of tha world issues which must come as a result of the wr. each branch of world commerce, industry, manufacture. etc.. will strive keenly for a position by which It can carry on Its own business with the most profit. This is Jiot to he done on the individualistic plan, but on the basis of organisation for definite purposes. The basic Industry, agriculture, too, must nowcome forward in a united organised effort or the farmers of America will one day be forced to the level of th European peasant. The watchword of the day in all work ta organiiation. We cannot g-et along without it. The individual is important only where his efforts are combined with others In some systematic ways which representa common interests. In breaking away ' from the old method of doing things, in facing the problems of reconstruction, the farmer can aerve himself best through the means of thorough organiiation. A ew years ago many people had the thought that the farmer was too selfsatisfied, too individualistic to Join his efforts with those of hie neighbor for the means, of protecting his own interests. The farmer has been too individualistic. The criticisms have ben Justified, but more recently he has seen the advantages of organisation and for the next decade, progress In agriculture will be marked by the effectiveness of tha organization work which the farmer will do. No other branch of industry will do this work for the farmer. He must now step forward and look after his own interests while reconstructive work is going on. Kxperience has shown that the correct basis for farmers' organizations is on the county unit plan. Such an organisation as this has been started in Lake county and I am informed by lt members that an opportunity will oon be given every farmer ir. the county to unite his efforts with those of his neighbor to' make this organisation 100 per cent perfect. This matter at this time deserves the most careful thoughtful consideration on th part of all who may in any way be Interested in the welfare of the agriculture of Lake county. ( encernlng iae International. Beginnig; November 30 and continuing for one week, the greatest live stock show in the world wUl be held at our doors. The International Live Ptock Exposition has been somewhat hampered in the past few years by the war, and earlier by the outbreak of the foot and mouth disease. We are now entering the first few days of rc8 ani on vry hand we hear reports to the effect that the world is almost in a starving condition. The producers of live stock and live stock prodcuts are promisad a number of prosperous years. The Internatioal management has this year arranged to put on a show which will bs helpful in every way to the Hv stock Interests of this and other countries. The champions of all breeds will be on exhibition. Besides this, there will be . horse show each evening, there will be exhibits of live stock products, a corn show and a government wool show. A few years ago a delegation from a far weatern state came to the International on a special train. This special train brought th eleadmg farm ers of that state, and along with them thir state governor. At the International this year there will be visitors who will have come thousands of miles to see this educational Fair. With it but a few miles from Lake county our farmers should, indeed, make an effort to spend a few days at the Jn ternational. It is a good thing for anv farmer to occasionally get away from his own business and see what ,r,me of hia fellow workers are doing. Take your year'a vacation next week by going to the International Live Stock Exposition. IS THIS ROMANCE STUFF? O'EST NE POSSIBLE, CHERIE! (Continued from page one.) shtil pitted war xone. They live on next to nothing and have scarcely enough to cover thoir rfakedness. T!ie."le girl is a dear and she's never been hungry since I've been here. One boy was taken prisoner by the Cermans and slaved for fhim for 4 years. He's 19 and going to enlist. Has an ugly stab wound made by a Roche when he escaped. Another family nearby lost fie girls deported by the Hun devils into Germany. God knows where they are now And cases like this are common. (To he continued Friday.) NO PANIC BROUGHT IN BY PEACE (Continued from page one ) found that it would be impossible to lay it in untilafter the war, as factories had been turned over to war work and manufacture of peace-time commodities strictly restricted. These restrictions ' will prove a blessing to many merchants now, or in the near future. j BIG INCREASE IX MAM'FACTTHI.XG. There will be an enormous increase in manufacturing of peace goods as soon as factories can be turned back to their old work, and the thousands of war-work factorlea built up during the last two years can aret started on constructive Industry, instead of destructive industry. There will be plenty of labor to run the factories of the world when the 50,000,000 men who have been carving on the business of the war return t- the business of peace. But there will be a vastly increased demand for the products of the factories. STARIG WILL CEASE. A starving population does not furnish much business for factoriea. Many millions of people have been starving three or four years. Whatever arrangements are to be made by the statesmen, it is certain that these people will quit starving. They will insist upon it. Generally speaking, everybody not in the fighting forces has been economising. Clothing is pretty well worn out, and much new furniture is needed. Buying that has been curtailed during the war will be resumed as soon aa wartime prices moderate a little. LIBERAL ATTITIDE I'RGED. Financiera ' agree that conflict between capital, following return of the soldiers, would precipitate many unfortunate conditions, and are urging a liberal attitude upon both employers and employes in the matter of readjustment. Labor has gained much In the United Statea since the war began and unions are recognised in many factories where they were not recognised before the war. This ground of union advancement labor leaders are sworn to hold. If employers try to take advantage of the more plentifully aupplied labor market by repudiating their new and perhaps enforced attitude toward organised labor, widespread trouble is inevitable, say those who are anxious that the returt to peace be made quietly and without upheavals. EASY IS THE WORD. Some employers already have talked publicly of the lower wages they expect to enforce, and labor leadera are alert for further signs of change. Some manufacturers are preparing to continue their war-time liberalism toward labor, and the expression. "Unionism Is better than bolehevism"is frequently heard in the eouncils of the employers. Most of the large employers aeem to agree that the lesa stirring of the pot of industrial unrest is done at this period, the better for all phases of production. The more gradually wtr workera are fed back Into peaceful Industry, the better for commercial and economic conditiona generally, all atudenta of the problem of readjustment admit. Already th infiltration process has begun, and there is no immediate prospect of violent reaction. But only extremely bad Judgment, acting epidemically, rould bring on panic with the restoration of peace and normal producing conditions, the financiers are agreed. NOTICE.
