CROWN POINT j The ornamental street lights were turned on for the first time on Friday evening and surely make the square very attractive and a decided improvement to the up-town district. A nation declares Itself by the manner In which it celebrates its holidays. If foreign-born people share and help to shape celebrations of American holidays, they will understand more quickly and more spontaeously take for their own that fusing fire, the American spirit. In the last analysis, all Americanizing agencies are only tending that fire and trying to bring within its heat those they would make Into Americans. The American spirit says that all men are comrades. If we are going to work in .its name, we must say so too and believe it and live it. Thanksgiving Pay is the least public, the most personal, tte Quietest of our holidays. As a rule, each of us invites only his friends to share in its celebration, which in a nnrt of his life at home. But It is distinctively and solely American, and it offers, perhaps, a better opportunity than our more boisterous festivals for the play of that comradeship which is at the very root of true Americanism. The following program will be render ed at a song service to be held at the Presbyterian church on Sunday mgut, Viw. 54. 1918: Organ The Lost Chord. Mrs. Antone Huseman had the misfortune to fall down several steps the early part of the week and crack t.he bone in her ankle. She was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frances Henderlong. who is confined to her bed where the accident happened. Chief Clerk Donnaha has received word from the government to the effect that his duties will end about Pec. 10 at which time all final reports and records will be filed and sealed. Mr. Donnaha has filled the office of chief clerk In a very efficient manner and the work which has gone through his hands has been enormous. His tasks at times has been anything but pleasant but bery very tactful. Mr. "Donnaha always handled matters with discretion and satisfaction to the government. Misses Bessie Ttaasch and Francs Grimmer were Gary visitors 'on Thursday. Owing to such a small attendance at the Bed Cross meeting on Wednesday night the present officers will hold over until such a time'as our officers can be elected. A very sad funeral was held at the Lutheran church on Friday when serv "Sounding of lhe Seventh Trumphel" is the subject of an interesting Bible Lecture to be delivered in the I. O. O. F. hall at 3:00 p. m. Sunday by Mr. G. A. HAIL, Of Chicago What is this trumpet? When will it sound? Who will hear it ? Mr. Hail will answer these questions and many more. If you are interested in the Bible and its message, come.

Bruce) vs. Benjamin Bothwell. 12588 Alienation of affection; Jacob Huber (S. C. Dwyer) vs. Ernest Krantwald.
12589 Receivership; Thinners Williams (M. J. Smith) vs. Frank Schulti. 12690 Glen Iark Lbr. Co. Patee and Johnson) vs. Zuzana Oreiger. et al. 12591 Anna Warrteld vs. Estate of James Leather. m22 Divorce; Saiie M. Harris (V. K. Roberts) vs. Milton J. Harris. 12393 Jennie Ward Wheeler (H. S. Barr) vs. Arthur N. Towers; forfeiture of lease. LYNDORA COMPLAINS LOUDLY (Continued from page one.) the neighborhood of 600 and In sixty days, when the 119 houses consisting cf 1T4 apartments are completed the figure will be Increased to 1.200 souls. In the face of this certainty of a large Increment to the' population of the east side, the Hammond school board should do something towards providing school facilities for these prospective cltlxens. To say nothing of the terribly congested conditions In East Hammond where school Is being kept In temporary locations. Hammond would not believe that the Standard had a 9100,000.000 war order until the new buildings were erected. Some one told a prominent east elder that a permit had been taken out for a 1250.000 hotel on Columbia avenue and he said, "Don't try to make me laugh." Then when the hotel was sarted some "foolish misguided" enthusiasts went out after a part of the 180.000,000 housing appropriation and were told they were wasting time. They got an appropriation and the work of construction started. Now there is a village of houses that are about to be osrupled. raising problems of street lighting, mail service, water service and transportation. In spite of the fact that the ordnance plant is completed Hammond seems still to be skeptical about the Standard. An official says the plant Is up a stump to get places to live for men In the freight department alone. He says: "I have filled up all of the boarding and rooming houses I know of. The hotel is filled until two are sle-eping in most of the rooms and I have simply got to find a place to live for hundreds of more men. "We have a large number of cars on tne side tracks piling up demurrage charges because we are unable to get men to unload them. We can't get the men because we can't house them. "And there you are. As the ordnance department reduces the freight car department will increase. This Is vouched for by one of the principal officials of the company. The payroll, the barometer of prosperity, will never be leas than it is today." And yet. can you convince the pessimist? Before the war it was the tariff, or the money market; durlnK the war It was the draft, the high prices and the uncertainty and now that the war is over there is something olse. And so East Hammond, or Lyndora. has given up hope that Hammond will ever believe in It. In fact, it has got to the point where it does not care. It is going right ahead believing In itself, building up, progressing and gaining In population unt one of these days it is going to glvfe the politicians of down town HanVmond an awful Jolt. Eaet Hammond Is Just as much on the war path now as the Eleventh Ward was a few years ago. It detnanda recognition. It is going to have a bank, is going to have a J50.000 cointn unity center, it is going to have a fine new movie theatre If present plans mature. It needs a drug store, a general store, a hospital, an improved park; It needs something to take the place of the saloons that were the center of community life before the state went dry. It needs schools, rooming houses, boarding houses, street improvements, churches, hundreds of moderate priced homes, and a little consideration and attention on the part of down town Hammond. It Ignores East Hammond, by providing but one decently paved street, connecting up the two parts of the city, by allowing the Nickel Plate railroad to cake hundreds of men and thousands of dollars of pay checks to Chicago instead of trying to solve the housing problem at home. Now the Standard development is about to make the principal transfer corner of the city at Calumet avenue and Sta testreet. It is about to build up alt of the territory east of Calumet avenue, assuring the final importance of Calumet avenue Itself, as , a great business thoroughfare. Don't forget Eaet Hammond AT THE ORPHEUM. "Hello, People, Hello," a song and dance revue with pretty girls, costumes and scenery, is touted as something unusual on the Orpheum theatre bill for Monday and Tuesday. It is said to be a good entertainment. The bill for Saturday and Sunday follows: Meyako Four, Jap act; Sid Lewis, brainless wonder; Worden's Birds; W. M. Morrow, mimic; Carson Brothersc, gymnastic act and Ray and Winn, singing novelty. YANKS FACE PRUSSIAN FRONTIER tt"NiTD Press Cablegram.! WITH THE AMERICANS ADVANCING TOWARD THE RHINE. Nov. 23.
