From Corporal Kunert. Somewhere Jn France.. Oct 1, 118 Dear Mother and Father: Have been unable to write you a letter, because we take a six-day hike, and therefore could not write any sooner, but will say that I am sure feeling good, and by the looks of things think that the whole world will feel better in a short time. Am sitting in my dugout after a day's work, toasting a few pieces of bread, and thought I had better write you folks a letter. We have been working very hard for a week or more, for we are connecting the American and German narrow gauge rallroar and havenow put it in shape that we. can take supplies over it. If you ever happen to aee it in motion pictures you can say that It was our company, as it was our company that did the Job. Keeeived your letter and was glad to hear from you and surely wa glad to hear that Jim was promote;! to superintendent of the shop, as I
figured he would get the Job in a short time after I left. I met a boy from Hammond yesterday who is in the Trench Mortars, by the name of Jackson. Used to e around Benny'n fruit store a great deal of the timeWe are now on a different front and building another railroad. but think we will be leaving here again in a week or two. Harry Dayholt myself and two other boys were sent on a scouting trip yesterday morning and Juet got back and will say I 'haver seen more in that day and a half than I ever could see wese I not here. I have seen dugouts that the Germans had before the drive that were divided into rooms with electric lights, curtains on the windows and portiers between the dors, also wagons that had twelve shower baths in it. Wnen we started back to our dugout we met a French lieutenant and asked him our direction, which he told us and then placed his hand on my shoulder and shook his head and said, "My but the American boys are the bravest I have seen in all my life, from private to general, and believe me, he is right: for if you could. see them the way I have it would convince you that they are' better than the best drilled soldiers in Europe. Well, I actually don't know what else to write, but will telLyou all the important details when I get home, which Will not be very long now. Cr not be worried if you do not hear from me so often for I have beru writing about once a week before, but this is the first one I have written, In about three weeks, but will write as often as I can. Well, my candle is just about out, so guess I will havo to close. Am feeling the beet in the world and hope you are the same. With love and kisses to all. Your son, CORP. ARNOLD KVNEP.T. Co.
