Br C.vtTEn Frkss. V1LLAUK OF I-OTTKN KND, HEr.TrOKDSHIKi2. EVG.. Nov. 4. (Uy mail.) The Kngltsh countryside Is today Just
I as quaint and peaceful and beautiful as
f'fr. nut it has loat its young men. On the village green !rt night the countryfolk gathered at sundown, as thry bnvp dono for "Several centuries. The cluckjMind in the middle of the green; the HeJ Lion Inn. (300 years old) tlsht iei hedges-all on the south; the squat little church steeple just over the. hedge on tho north; snd the heathery moor to ths nest all were just as thej- were before the war, except. There were no y6ung men. They who came together on the srreen were women, girls, ahildren. old men and occasionally a man of 50. Two aober-faced young, women were pushing baby cariragea. A motherly woman of 60 presided at the bar in the Red Lion (the bar was perhaps 4 feet long In a room about8 feet square.) On the right was another brown-walled room with a bare table In the center. A dozen old men were smoking and sipping their ale. At the head of the tablo sat a 'soldier, home on leave. The innkeeper's daughter was banging a tinpanny piano :n the tiny parlor. She Tlayed to an empty room and to a soldier's picture above the Instrument. The Inn Is a squat little place, mostly grown to roof and many-barreled chimneys (the kind you used to see In your Mother Goose book, with storks standing on them). The cracks between the brick shingles are stuffed with moss. A wooden tablet nailed to the wall of the village church by the door displays the "Koll of Honor." Underneath on a little wooden shelf a few sprays of flowers tell thoir story. It was a Hertsfordshire regiment, with Its quota from Potten End, that was practically wiped out at Gallipoll. From the common this morning one could squads of Women's Land army girls in khaki, shocking wheat in the hedge-framed fields. ' Behind, the roofs and chimneys of the Aillag were jti?t visible over the masses of trees, shrubs, and hedges which form the basis of every English landscape. In every one of those homes was 1, perhaps 2. 'i or 4 empty chairs, many of which would never be filled. A crowd of girls was blackberrying among: the brambles and bracken on the moor. Lovers' Lane, smooth and grassy between high hedge-walls, was empty. A tiny girl in gingham and a bit of a boy with yellow curls were marching, hand in hand, into Its far end.

SPORTSMEN GALLED FOR
DEC. MEET
Times Bureau. At State Capital. INDIANAPOLIS, IND.. Nov. 21. A state meeting of Indiana sportsmen, to be held In the chamber of the House of Representatives. State House, Indianapolis. Tuesday afternoon and evening. December 3, has been called by state commissioner of fisheries and game, E. C. Shireman . s Matters of great importance regarding future policy of the Indiana Fish and Game Commission and the fish and game cause in general, will come before this gathering of law-abiding sportsmen, and It Is urged by the state commissioner that all citizens Interested will find a way to attend. This meeting is open to everyone. "Good sportsmen in every locality should Insist that all enthusiastic over a prospect of'bettering' fish and game protection and thereby raising more good food lor the peoples use, should attend this Important meeting," said State Commissioner Shireman. "For some time I have had In mind a method whereby the good sportsmen of Indiana would have a voice In their own affairs, and I am arranging an opportunity behind this movement, I am sure that It will be a pronounced success." The address of welcome will be given by Governor James P. Goodrich. If the governor la able to appear in pubio at this time. E. A. Queries, of New York, official of the American Game Protective Association and prominent lecturer and entertainer on fish and game subjects, will speak at the gathering at the State House on the evening of Dec. 3. Mr. yuarles will bring with him a number of moving picture films on fish and game subjects, to supplement his lecture . These films will be a scientific, educational and entertaining nature and have never been seen In Indiana. Pictures from state breeding farms. juall and pheasant raising In various stages, the work of exceptionally fine hunting dogs, and many other features of interest to lovers of out-door sports, will be thrown on the screen. "Conservation" will be the keynote of this state meeting. The conservation of fish, game, and birds at the source of supply Is absolutely essential for the future welfare of beneficial forms of wild life. In the opinion of those who tudy these questions. Every mile of stream In Indiana is capable of producing good fish food, under proper protection. The two hundred thousand acres of flne lake water in the state will raise hundreds of pounds of food per acre, under favorable conditions. Thi is "but one viewpoint of the subject! The work with which the Indian. Fish and Game Commission Is concerned has many angles. While the state meeting Is called by the commissioner of Indiana, no attempt to dictate policies to the sportsmen will be made. Whatever decisions and resolutions are arrived at In the debates and discussions will be their own. It is expected that this meeting will have important bearing on future fish and game policies in Indiana. Therefore it is most urgently requested that true sportsmen of all counties, men a.nd women both, will find time to be at Indianapolis Tuesday, Dec. 3.
