PETROIT. Nov. 1. Tyrus Raymond Cobb, the star outfielder of the Detroit TlRrs, has arrived in France. "Word to that effect has been received at the office of the local team. Cobb has a commission in the gas and flame department. Ky . demanded that the Kentucky State Council of Defense take steps officially necessary to call off the fall race meet t once, as all the schools, churches, and nearly ell business houses of northern Kentucky have been closed for some weeks at tremendous loss to the section. The Council of Defense, after promulgation of the demand, notified tho racetrack heads that no races woutd be attempted until the presert Influenza epidemic was officially declared at an end. Racing authorities stated that the meeting would be abandoned.

THE second of the ffre.it pair of tackles on the Maroon football champions of 1913 has ben killed in France. Capt. Ilaroll ilattlf-r, who. with "Spike" Shull. h"l 1 down the tackle positions, was killed recently in attempting to take food to the lost battalion of Col. YVhittosley in Argronne forest. His mother received tho information in a letter from his commanding officer.
