Chicago Merchants Think They Are Discriminated Against. representatives of ic cream and sofe drink establishments in E. Chicago and Indiana Harbor, win have been strenuously objectlne to the order of the local board of health closing" such places during the epidemic, were in session last nii?ht at the office of J. M. It sems that while the East Chicago board of health hae been closinK these places and not permitting any of them so sell soft drinks or ice cream for cunsumption off the property, neither Hammond nor Gary nor any cf the ad joining towns have taken such action. At the meeting: last night, it became apparent that the local board of health wanted to be fair in the matter but at the same i time they belived that the drinking and eating from common containers not sterilized was a prolific source of infection and should be stopped in the interests of public health. The matter was thoroughly discus sed and a compromise arlved at whereby all soft drinks and ice cream places may open provided they will furnish individual paper containers or provided that such places are equipped with hot water facilities so that all containers may be thoroughly sterilized each time they are used.
