The call from the federal government was for l.."n" and J to date the nanus of but !Kt5 have been Certitied to the surgeon general. 1 The epidemic of influenza has demon- ( straled the importance of adequate nursing. How many lives might have been saved in camps and cantonments had there been axailnhle to the military authorities a sufficient number of nurses, no one, of course, knows. But that It would have been a number of lar$e proportions, no one will dispute. Aside from the demand from the army the civilian hospitals have been overtaxed and there has been h unanimous call for help. The more experienced nurses, in not a few cases, were worked to a stal bordering collapse. Tha assistance that the fully enrolled student nurses corps might have rendered is inestimable. Indiana has a greater concern now than ever with enrolling Immediately the needed 54 4 student nurses to make up its full quota. In fact there are Fplendid arguments why the enrollment should far exceed the quota. There are being constructed in many county hospital facilities for caring for returned soldiers and the increased number of nervous and tubercular cases normally developed on account of war conditions. In every county in the state there is an organization charged with registering for service the community's share of the total of student nurses asked from the state. Never has there been a more propitious time in which to tarry the registration campaign to a splendid sue-. ces:. Quietest Campaign in His tory; No Issues, Speeches, ! No Nothing; Windup will also Be Quiet. Times ;rp.i:.tr. At Statu Capital. IXDIA.N'AI'OLIS. IND, Oct. IV With rt practically certain that the ?tate board of health will extend indefinitely the ban on public gatherings of every description throughout the state, the present political campaign will go down in the history of the stnte a probably the most unique of its klni in the political annals of Indiana. The indications now are that neither the Republicans or Democrats wiil have a speaking campaign before the election. The influenza-pneumonia situation has not reached the point where it can be said "Hhat the ban of the state board of health will be lifted before November 5. Epidemics, of this character, publie health officials say. run from two to six weeks wiih alwavs the possibility of reoccurrences of the disease. Two weeks have passed since there became danger of jtn epidemic and the peak has not been reached yet. Both political parties therefore are directing all efforts to organization and advertising work. Both parties have tentative speaking arrangements which may be resorted to at the eleventh hour if conditions permit but political workers generally arc going on the assumption that there will be no political speaking in Indiana before the election this year. Another peculiarity of the most unusual campaign that Indiana lias evtr seen is that neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have seemed to be able to raise a state Issue which has attracted the attention of the voters. The only exception seems to be some light on the legislati situation in the way of a j ublic communication of the Indiana Dry Federation to the effect that the hquor element has it greatest influence with the Pemocrai ie candidates for both houses of the state leglMat ure. This reference to the litjuor situation Indicates tbnt there may be nn r ffort at the next session of the legislature to put Indiana back, to a limited extent at least, into "wet" territory. t'p to this time the congressional situation has held the center of what interest there has been evinced in the political situation and this has been due to the relation of this contest to the prosecution of the war. The Republican position is that the Republican congressmen have a better war record than the Democrats and that therefore the voters should elect 13 Republican congressmen this time instead of nine.
