Steve Fano, the East Chicasr police officer who came so near loping his life as the result of an attack by colored thugs on Guthrie street. Indiana Harbor, is ag:ain walking a beat In that'eity with a watchful eye for all offenders. Steve broke up a game of craps on Guthrie street not far from the police station the night of June 27th. lie took the dice and warned tho men about violating the law publicly in this manner nnd told them'o go home. Six mru jumyed upon him and while one held his wrt.t with both hands another stabbed and cut him severely with a knife. Steve, however, la one of the tcamest omVers on the force, and although his abdomen was ripped open and his body pierced with several bad
stabs, he covered his aTTdominal wound with one hand and with the other held his gun on three of the men and marched them to the station. Then he collapsed. At the hospital b hovered between life and death for four weeks with no hope from the physicians for recovery.
He was always hopeful, however, never giving up for an instant. His courage and optimism and the excellent care that he received finally brought him through, although he was in the hospital for thirteen weeks, being finally released on September 27. He gives frreat credit to Dr. Teegarden and to his faithful nurse, T.Iiss Eleanor M. Tabor, of 5S1 lichigan avenue, Hammond, for his recovery. Tfalbert I.ee, a negro, charged with assault and battery with intent to kill Policeman Fano. was found guilty and f.ned M5 by a jury in Judfre Tieiter's court yesterday. Iee was charged -with holding Fano's hands while another negro who escaped carved the officer.
