Do ybz Think There is No Competition? If anyone thinks there is no competition amongst the big packers he ought to go through a day's work with Swift & Company. Let him begin at the pens when the live stcck comes in; let him try to buy a nice bunch of fat steers quietly and at his own price, without somebody's bidding againsf him. Let him realize the scrupulous care taken at the plant that not' one thing is lost or wasted in order that costs may be held to a minimum. Let him go up into the office where market reports are coming in, and reports of what other concerns are doing. Let him watch the director of the Swift Refrigerator fleet, maneuvering it over the face of the country like a fleet of battleships at sea. Let hirn take a trip with a Swift & Company salesman and try to sell a few orders of meat. Let him stay at a branch house for an hour or two and see the retail meat dealers drive their bargains to the last penny as they shop around among the packers' branch . houses, the wholesale dealers, and the local packing plants. And then, when the day is over, let him have half an hour in the accounting department, where he can see for himself on what small profits the business is done. (Less than 4 cents on each dollar of sales.) If he still thinks there is no competition in the meat business it will be because he wants to think so.

Letters from Soldiers Written to the Home Felks From Thi3 Side and the Other Side of the Water.

From John Mang. Camp Upton. Oct. 7, 1318. Dear Parents and All: Will write you a few lines to let you know we are still here yet and expect to lea.ve any time. Am well and hope the 'same of all of you. We had a pretty good rain storm out here yesterday afternoon. It Is pretty told out here today. We are all set to go now. all we are waiting on is to get paid and ws will get that tonight or tomorrow. If wo had had our clothes and things we would have been gone already. Co.b K and F are gono already and are on the water by this time. I wish we were over there for it is getting pretty cold now and the Dutch are watching like h now for the Tankees. But we don't care If they don't get us we will give them h over there." We are having good times down here. "We don't do a thing but get our supplies and eat. They only call the roil once a day. W sleep until 7:S0 every morning. Some are up at 5:30 and raise h . Wo are having the best time of our life now. If we never have another we should worry. We sure have some good warm clothes, no matter how cold it is, we won't get cold. We got good underwear, heavy woolen clothes and a good overcoat and mittens. The officers gave us each 2 pounds of meat and two boxes of hard tack, dog biscuits. Ha: ha! That is if Fritz tries to sink us. The only trouble here is that we don't get anything to eat worth much. But I guess they are trying to get us used to it. By the time we coma back

we can eat grass witsh. the cows. We got some shoes they weigh 7 rounds.

They are full of hob-nails. If a fellow

wears a pair out in a year he has got to go some. There are over fifty men out of our company in the hospital now with Spanish influenza, they sure have got some bunch of fellows in there. About fifty died yesterday it sure was a fright. This whole camp Is under quarantine for 41 days. I sure am glad to leave this place for they are coming and going every day. Well, as news is getting scarre around here I don't know much so if you don't hear you know where I am. Nick and Ralston Todd are still In Ohio. Best love and regards to all. From Chandos Bagon. A letter from Private Chandos S. Ragon under date of September 5 from "over there" to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer E. Ragon. 80S Harrison street, Gary, relates a few of his experiences as follows: Dear Tarents: Will now try and xrlte you a few lines, j 8m well and feel fine. We changed camps this week. We were two days and nights on the train Rnd believe me it was some rid": we rode in

: small box cars with sa.Lt, in i... i, j was a little crowded, but v.c gul to i where we were goine cen though we

had to sleep two deep part of the way. . The country sure is beautiful through here, but you can tell that France has been at war for some time. Tou don't seo :nany young men around. Most of thorn are at the front. I have seen lots o" prisoners since I have been here, but they all seem contented to stay here. They would rather be a prisoner here than fighting at the front, because they et treated very good. We came through sor 3 fine large cities on our trip here and all the farms are very old-fashlnned. The people 8 -e mostly old and drens very funny. The place where I am at now is a very i'.ne place. We are quartered in houses and the people are so good to us. It is the best place I liave struck since leaving Quantico. Va. We have a Y. M. C. A. and a canteen and can get most everything we want. This morning we went down to a small creek and washed our clothes and took a swim and had a good time. The swimming hoio reminded me of the old swimming hole at Lowell. You remember when I use to go swimming down there and forgot to come home for supper and you got the whole town after me, don't you? Those were the good old days, but since

I hare been in the marine corrs I have certainly seen some of this old world and have had lots of experiences that I would not part with for1 a considerable amount of money. But the best time of all Is when we go over the top after the boches and see them run. The Marines sure have the respect of everybody over here, and believe me I am sure glad I

am a Marine and when we go over the top I will bo satisfied. We sure have them on the run and we are going to keep them running. They fear the name of Marines over here. I have not seen or heard anything of

brother Forest over here, but I am goin cn the search for h!m,ill we meet. Presume the poor boy is at the front now. Well, I must close, so good-by. Your loving son. rVT. CHANDOS R. RAGON. Co. A. 4th Separate Battalion. V. S. Marine Corp. A. E. F.. France, via New York.

How often do we hear the expression among women, "I am so nervous, 1 canrot sleop," or "it seems as though I should fly." Such women should profit by Mrs. Sultze's experience and give this famous root and herb remedy, Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, a trial. For forty years it has been overcoming such serious conditions as displacements, inflammation, ulceration, irregularities, periodic pains, backache, dizziness, and nervous prostration of women, and is now considered the standard remedy for such ailments.
