one hundred miles from I'aris while it Is six hundred miles from Berlin, and we must not be lulled into a feeling of a sense of security because the war seems to be going well with us just now and the Ilohenzollerns and Hapsburgs are stealthy and in bad faith clamoring loudly, for an opportunity to shut down on hostilities and bicker for an autocratic, victorious peace. The time is not ripe to relax one iota in our determination to bat the Hun and bat him hard. We must knock him down and blindfold and gag him first. A lot of us must subscribe a second time on this Fourth drive and do belter than we have done the first time. Reports received the first of the handicap
month indicate that the frost on June 23rd did more damage to the corn crop
It is ioii badly in some
localities and this is interfering, to some extent, with the seeding of winter wheat and rye. On something over 7,000 acres of spring wheat in the state the yield averaged slightly hotter than winter wheat. This is probably due to better sed and more care in preparing the soil. Most of it va3 on small experimental ratches, but has encouraged farmers to try it on a more extensive
scale next year. Howrvor. many experts i do not adviic mowing spring whfat in

j oats in nearly every county than was
anticipated earlier in the season, and for the state the average was 42 bushels per acre. The weight averaged from 32 lo 38 pounds per measured bushel and the quality is exceptionilly good. Considerably more barley was grown this year than heretofore and the yield and quality ar fully up to expectations, especially is this true in- the northern counties. They think this retirement will be accomplished before winter sets in. This fact is evidenced by official reports showing the British bag of 10,000 prisoners Tuesday. The present retreat is viewed as the direct result of the continued hammering all along the western line.

Our boys have gone forth determined to do all and give their last drop of blood if need be to utterly destroy this foe and to again restore to safety our free institutions and those of our allies now in deadly peril across the sea. We can absolutely depend upon them to do well, supremely well, their part. The measure and degree of their success and likewise the extent of their sacrifice will depend largely upon the amount of help and support we give them now at home. To do our part recuires of us heroic effort here and now. We are in the war as much and are responsible for its successful conduct ns much as they arc. Wc must finance the enterprise at this end of the line or we cannot keep them supplied and equipped to do the big part expected of them over there. We must not stop at the point where mere inconvenience or a slight lowering ef interest rates affects the inside of our pocketbooks. The situation exacts from us the duty of buying Liberty Bonds no matter how it may nTcet some other particularly financial plan or scheme w may prefer to put through. We must readjust ourselves some way to meet this obligation as we would to pay a doctor for- an operation to arrest the ravages of a cancer. This call is for six billion dollars ready cash from us. between now and February 1. in exchange for the best, long-time, interest-bearing bonds for sale anywhere in the world trday. In buying these, though it may disarrange our program of business somewhat, we are making a good investment for ourselves and are doing a heroic service for c-tr Government. Are we not as patriotic a people as the French? Just the other day that little nation subscribed six billion dollars to its Eighth Liberty Bond drive and went over the top in only a few hours. Where are our people with their boasted wealth and mighty population? A little slow, that is all. When they get waked up they too will go over ihe top. When most of us. who have heretofore subscribed. ;javc in our subscriptions we went way below our maximum limit, thinking to ourselves that others would take the required amount and meet our country's call for us and others who could buy have also declined, here nr.d there, because they. too. thought others would take what they should take and
