Here are three smart hats which shew the season's whims. The one n top is black panne velvet with an odd slashed and upturned brim. Th only trimming: '3 a band of French blue ostrich feathers covered with maline which encircles the crown. A variation of the ever popular tam shape is shown at the lower left It la made of felt and ribbon interlaced in checker-board effect. Perhaps the most interesting hat of the three is the one on the lower Tight. It is chiffon velvet with a white back .and a black pile. Shirring about the brim and smocking in white are the distinctive features.

Last Year's Hammond Star. Is a "Pro," Says U & I, Which Is No Reason WhyHe Shouldn't Play Football.

Tha University of Illinois filed a protet with athletic authorities at the Great Lakes Naval Training station today against playing "Paddy" Driscoll, Hammond's greatest football player, a former Northwestern star, In the game with Illinois at Urbana next Saturday. lrlscoll Is charged with professionalism. Ha played professional football with a Hammond, Ind., team and baseball with the Chicago Cubs. The naval station has no eligibility lequirements other than its team be romposed of enlisted men. Driscoll is a student at the officers materiil school. He probably will be kept out of the game, it is said. The navy eleven has scheduled games wtth Purdue at Lafayette, Ind., on Nov. CO, Northwestern on Oct. 13. and a tentative game with Minnesota on Nov. 23. The Northwestern game will be played at Great Lakes. The Minnesota contest will be played either at Minneapolis or at Great Lakes.

Sam McGowan floored Morris, the Kentucky University boy, by way of ending one championship bout. Henry of the quartermaster school kept the crown with a draw decision against Ford, and Rehor of the hospital school was successful against Hujap. The stock yards cups for th? week went to the Second Regiment. The Seventh placed, with the Twelfth third. Clarence Rowland refereed one of the bouts.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 10. Another world's record in big game fishing was shattered in the Catalina island waters when James AV. Jump recently landed a 311-pound marlin swordfish in twenty-eight minutes, with "lighf tackle. Not enly is this unprecedented with light tackle, but the fish was near the Tuna Club record for a swordfish on any tackle. The bit'rest one ever caught was, in 1016, which weighed 352 pounds. Not in many years have the deep sea fighters been so plentiful as this season off the famous southern California banks. Great swarms of jel-low-tail and other light tackle prizes have been frequent. The leaping tuna, dolrMn and marlin swordfish, varying In sizes from 60 to more than 300 pounds, have been plentiful. "W". C. Boschen, of New York, is credited with capturing ninety-nine tuna and five swordfish for the season. His nearest competitor is "James W. Jump, of Los Angeles, with eightysix tuna and eleven swordfish. Ralph Vandenl holds the record for the seaBon with the largest tuna caught. It weighed 143 pounds. CROSS COUNTRY RUN ABANDONED NEW TORK Oct. 10. The intercollegiate cross country championship run to have been held at Van Cortlandt park, this city, on Nov. 23, has been canceled. This action was taken by the advisory board of the I.jC. A. A. A. A. after a canvass of the leading colleges of the east." At a majority of the Institutions the athletic associations have temporarily suspended activities and th presidents of the colleges, in replying to the communications, stated that there was little possibility of teams or individual runners competing.

PONTIAC TEAM IS DISBANDED FONTIAC. ILL., Oct. 10. The Tontiac High school football team has canceled all games and disbanded on account of the demise of their halfback. Maurice Thompson, who died from injuries received in a game last Saturday.
