Despite the prevalence of the Spanish influenza and the War Department ban on extended trips, eight Big Ten teams will open the football season this afternoon as originally scheduled. The Maroons and Northwesterns, the only idlers, had no cng-afrements. In some instances changes were made iti the schedule to comply with the government's order refrardtnif overnight absence from student army training camps, but order didn't stop a single eleven that was carded to perform. The only instance in the Big- Ten of a complete cancellation was at Madison, where F.eloit was scheduled, and this contest was called off because of the iflueuza, th- rehy provinig that the "fl'i" is miifhtier than the sword. Sailors and Pitt Stopped.
A more pointed example of the might of "flu" was furnished last night by the culling off of the Creat Lakes-Pitts-burt'h University clash at Forbes field. The bluejackets started to Pittsburgh Thursday night, but yesterday the influenza was rampant in Pennsylvania in such a degree that public gatherings of any nature wer prohibited, including; the gridiron battle, that was expected to be one of the very best of the season. Minnesota, originally booked to rlsy South Dakota, will exhibit against a collection of all-stars, and instead of Ames the Chanute field aviators will be Illinois' fovmen.
Football Games Today Chanute Avltor at Illinois. Fort Haxtlsoa at Pardn.. . Kentucky Stats at Indiana. Oilo Wslyaa at OLio State. Iowa at Nebraska. Case at SUoMg-an. All-Strs at JClnneaota, Notre Same Freshmen at Culver.

GOPHERS STILL MAY PLAY HERE
The Chicago-Minnesota football game orginally scheduled for next Saturday on Stair.? field, but canceled because of the recent ruling of the war department forbidding out of town trips during October, may be played on the Midway cither Thanksgiving day or the Saturday following. According to David S. Merriam, business manager of Maroon athletics, Minnesota has asked for either date. Merriam asserted it was agreeable to Stag?: if sanction can be obtained from M3j. Wygant.

ANOTHER GASLESS SUNDAY ON PROGRAM Absolute silence on the part of the fuel administrator means at least one more "gasless" Sunday.- Whether tomorrow is to be the last remains to be seen. Somehow or other the w-eather man and the gasoline division of the fuel administration seem to have been doing god team work in conserving the gaso
line supply. By doling out bad weather j
during the week nobody wanted to go niotorng and by shutting off driving on Sunday, when weather has been ideal, huge quantities of the liquid fuel have been conserved.
