THE GREATEST ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN IN ALL HISTORY. Jinrno n.gnificent writing lias been done in bbai of the :-"ourii. Liberty Loan campaign. Appeals that at" calcu'-tted to touch every human emotion, pla- upn er.'rv phase of character, have been penned by men Ii;t'e short of inspired. Men writing under the sorrow cf personal loss. Men writing out of hatred for the awful crimes that have been committed. Men writing with the white hot fires of pauto'iso thrilling them through and through. I: is the eic-;ie.t a Ivrrtising campaign ever conduced in aiy land at any time in the world's history. 1' represents the acme of advertising art and science. Sometimes you find some little selfish seeker after political preferment assailing what it pleases him to term a " venal press." The preachers of class hatred strut t'iir brief hour berating newspapers, and funieiy seeking to arouse f'ifrust by charging them with beins. he etvants of designing rapi'al ben' upon th enrdavrmnv.i of mankind. Not all newspapers are honest and sincere; but the majority of theia arc. They strive for the betterment ol mankind. So tar as they are able they point the wav - be -r things, wain against dangers that lurk in th .t. . k and iP'--: ? ,'.-! v r:vrror the everyday life of the :iTt of every clinic. Give, heed to this. It is an amazing but unassailable truth. 'n all th" uniiprse there is n"" mncy eno.:j:h to buy the space 'hat newspapers, big and little, magazine.: and established pjbllcationa of every class in the 4'nited States have donated to the cause of the fight' in? Liberty Loan. N'evf i before w as there a project that meant so much to every American and to every human being in ail the world as does this Fourth Liberty Loan arid publishers have carried the message to their readers wjtn a unanimity ami ardor that. Is nothing Ip? han a-'onishing. The i.rst page, which is the newspaper's show window-, has rune wi:h the message. The editorial d.-pait-mem. in pi actically all cases sacred from the influence of the business office, has thundered with advertising for the Fighting Liberty Loan, while 'he advertising pages have bristled with the announeemcn : s. Some of thFe announcements have been paid for by patriotic
MEMORY.
Tbtre are many kinds of memory k.. ttein. bi: no one. :
has yet invented a system that will help a man forge1. Boots may deaden the senses for a v'.i'.ie and dope may lift one on the wings of dreams. b': '. n-rts ihe fearful awakening wnen memory becomes more mere! less than ver because it has been robbed of its rightful toll. No man can of himself drive awa the pangs ot memory --but there is a road to peice of mind for thot-e who are truly sorry for the stn which will nor be put out of one's mind. First, it's oulv tight and fair that the sin euiumit'ed should he confessed 1o the one who was inju-ed -whoever else one may confess to Serond. it's only right and fait that u b restitution as one can make should tie offeied to ihe one who wa injured. Hut memory is made hideous not only by our o'i: sin. bjit because of others' sin or failure. lu such cass the cultivation of the s-pirit of fc giveness will brine peace of mind, and the consciousness that each of us has his own short -comings which cans others to grieve and sorrow. Memory, top, is made unnappy betau.se of the loss o; on-: -..ho . loved but who has gone away for a brier time, perhaps, or forever. To secure peace of mind for those who suffer on thin account, there is work, woik. work for those w ho have suffered as we have, or for those who need our help for
whatever reason. j
Memory is merciless only to ihose who are defiatr of its power, but it is ever charitable to those who seek its favor In the atiemp' 'o crowd 'he heart and mind with lofiier thonchts and ambitions.

GASOLINE. The gasoline situation turns out :o b raii.er simple. Trie produc'ion is not quite sutTicienf for the normal demand at home plus the abnormal demand abroad. In the winter we can get along very well, because the natural curtailment of pleasut e-riding saves enough gasoline for export requirements, and establishes a surplus bfrides. It was so last winter, and will be so the coming winter. In the summer we consume moie than is produced., making a deficit. Ordinarily the winter surplus w-juld make up the summer deficit. That is no longer true. It is openly a ques tion. then, how soon in the year that deficit become-; ser ious. and how i: is to be met when it come3. This year the. deficit might have hit us hard in September or October if the- fuel administra' ion had not acted before i' was reaily upon us. We are now saving the nece-sary fuol by having the greater part of the nation 's'r.ip .'.'urn using pleasure cars on Sunday. That "voluntary' method is said to be proving effective 1; arouses cons'derable criticism, however, owins to the fact that it is no" applied to 'he who" country, and owing to the local abuses that have attended its adoption. It is no1 that aut omobiltsts ate unwilling to acquiesce so much as that citizens and officials ate too zealous in forcing acquiescence, it might be better if the n;! were made mandatory Ihe government The prs . -0o. wou'd be better s-a'-sfWl if 'he west were included.
