OHX J. PERSHING was born September 1,3. 1SO0. in Laclede. Mo. In 1S77 he taught the negro school in Laclede. Graduated with h trior from the State Normal at Kirksvillc, Mo., in 1880. Taught school at Prairie Mound. Mo., until jSS.:. lie won the arpoiutmcnt to West Point in a
competitive examination July 14. iS8j. Graduated from West Point in 1886 as Second Lieutenant. Assigned to Sixth Cavalry in the Apaches campaign. Promoted to First Lieutenant in 1801. At the outbreak of Spanish-American War. assigned to the Tenth Cavalry. V. .u d'-tinctioti at the battle of San Juan. Ordered to Philippines as Captain and Adjutant General, District of Mindanao, in 18.09. On General Staff in 1904, he met and won Mi.-.s Prances K. Warren, daughter of Senator Warren, of Wyoming. They were married in Januarv. 1905. and left for Tapan the same day, where Perching was Military Attache and b-rvcr m the Russo-Japanese War. In 1006 promoted to be Brigadier General over the heads of 8oj officer. In command of the Department of Minclanoa he tlrmly established American authority in the Philippines. In i'H4 he was given command of Fort P.b's.; on the Mexican Border. In August, 1915, his home in the Pre i-.L San Francisco, burned and hi wife and tiiree children perished in the flames.
