SHORTAGE OF . TEACHERS NOTICEABLE

Bt United Press. INDIANAPOLIS. IND.. Sept. 11. With public grade and high, schools throughout the stata opening for the year's term this week a shortage of teachers was noticeable in many sections, especially in the rural districts. Cities reported a sufficient supply of instructors except in high schools. There is a general shortage in instructors to take the place of men teachers who had charge of the science, commercial and shop courses. In Indianapolis there were more than moagh teachers to meet the demand in the grade schools, about 1,200 being employed. In the rural districts persons who formerly taught but have entered other lines of work have volunteered their services in many instances and will relieve the scarcity to 6ome extent. Military training has been a part of the course in many of the high schools in the larger cities. Capt. Newton Hardin, formerly of the Rainbow division, is in charge of the military courses in the Indianapolis high schools. The boys of the three high schools will be formed into three battalions, from which a regiment will bo organized with a minimum strength of 1.209 and a minimum strength of 1.800.
