LATEST MAN KILLER USED BY THE HUNS

New German machine guru Thia photo shows the latest man killer invented by the Germans in an effort to devise something that will halt the advance of the allies and stave off defeat of the kaiser and his crew. The machine pun is designed to hurl email shells with great rapidity and is now in use on the western battle lute.

THORNTON FIELD

Beside the six wells cf the Southwest Oil Coiurany that are all producers, the Futnarn Oil and Refining Co., encountered the oil Builds a. few days ago and also It Is under-stood, tr.at the Upton Oil and G01 Company have witnessed the same encouragement. The Putnam Co., will make arrangements to shoot their well within a short time and much activity Is expected to develcpe In the UptooThornton field this fall. Many Companies which have holdings In the field have been waiting results Ojf the few companies that are now operating will make arrangements to start development. The field Is now a proven field and It la only a matter of a short time until rigs and derricks will be seen all ever the field and the Upton-Thornton field will be one of the most active fields In the state for the fact that he sands are now struck at a depth of from 600 to 750 fet and a single crew can average a well every ten days. Other companies that are making prrar.pemen'9 to stavt drilling are: The North Cei.lral Oil Co., The Mackwell Oil and Refining Co., The Wyoming High Gravity Oil Co., Th Wyoming-Dakota and otherj. The fact that the east well cf the Southwest Co., and the Putnam striok!ng the sand fit a shallow depth, the field will get better as they get on lower ground. The Southwest have the frame work rompleted for their refinery and have some of their machinery on the, ground and the balance Is expected to arrive at any time- and the refinery will b operating within the next ten days. Thi Company are taking the necessary steps to secure a side track which will he but a few hundred fet from their refinery, which will be very useful to them and other companies operating in the field. The Sinclair Refining Company, of East Chicago has a special train on the Pennsylvania railroad for their employes while the rest of us have to look out for ourselves. Now In 1915 and for several years prior, we enjoyed very Rood transportation all through the p'i;!nn. We had a suburban service furnished by the N. Y. C. Lines and trams known a' Lake Shore loop trains. The fares on these trains were reasonable until 1 ft 1 6. when fares were advanced from 2.1c to fOc per ride. The resuH was that patrons could not afford to par this raise and began riding the street enrr, and the loop train were finally taken off on account of liok o.f patronage. It became known here today that the state of Indiana has been honored by the selection of one of Its state officials to serve ns one of sven members of the new advisory committee of the Republican national committee. L. H. Wright, head of the State Grange In Indiana, and chairman of the state highway commission, has been appointed to membership on the Republican national advisory committee by Will II. Hays, Republican national chairman. Mr. Wright returned to Indianapolis yesterday from Washington, where he attended a meeting last week of the new committee. No official word of the appointment of a national advisory committee had reached Indiana prior to Mr. Wright's return. Other members of the committee, Mr. Wright paid, include Gifford Pinchot. S.

Milo Campbell of Michigan and Mr. Rhodes of GeorgiaIt had been rumored here for tome time that Mr. Wright would represent the state of Indiana In some connection with the Republican national committee. Mr. Wright did not discuss the aims and purposes o the new committee, but said it had held a conference at which Republican conditions throughout the country were discussed and another meeting would he held sometime in the future. Mr. Wright long has been Influential with the farming element In Hoosier Hfe and his work as chairman of the state highway commission although that body now Is practically de facto, awaiting a decision from tne rapreme court on the constitutionality of the highway commission law has attracted wide attention.
