CAUSE OF GERMAN RETREAT Ry CARL ;P.o.T (United Press Staff Correspondent ) WASHINGTON, D. C, Sept. 6. American "eat 'em up" spirit multiplied by more than 1,600,000 is the real answer to the ease with which the German has been pushed back since the Marne combat, according to the views expressed by a prominent general staff officer today to the oft repeated question. "Why is it that the German who has never tasted a real disaster is now being: rushed back almost at will?" The reasons are three fold as outlined by the staff officer. 1. Numerical superiority of th allies, obtained by America's quick troop movement. 2. American perS. Lowered German moral. The officer said that the German is now retreating aaainst his will and is not retiring to positions which would jive any added advantage.
