HEALTH HEEDED BT THE YOUNG
By DR. J. N. HURTT. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.. July 29. The first draft called 3.520.345 men. Of this nim!r 2. 510. 705 werd examined as to health and fitness and 730. 75S were rejected as unfit. This Is S5 pf cent. By this experience we, discovered that of our young men In the draft age period of 21 to 31 only 63 per cent areflt to defend us against the Huns. In Hunland the same experience shows that fully SO per cent of the young men In the same age period are fit for soldiers. This Indicates the Huns are more physically fit Than the Americans. The score Is not to our credit, but we must face It. It Is the truth and It win not down; rve should be ashamed because our health, which is within our own keeping, should be the best of all nations. "Why is it not? Evidently we ignore the science of hygene which leads to health. We have at this time hardly risen out ' f the staee of ignorance which led us to laugh and sr.eer- and Jeer at microbes hil" the Huns passed that point twenty years ago. Again we do pot seem to l;n.iw that the f ou.-.datlons of health are laid in youth, for only a few states have child-welfare bureaus or have medical u.spection of high schools. The Huns and even the Japanese have had these for almost two decades. The science of medicine has proclaimed the virtues of the physical care of children from the very housetops for twenty-five ".ears, but this vital information has been laughed st. "Worse thin that, nothing has been dr.e. and out of abundant ignorance and conceit we have hurled epithet "cranks" at the prophets. It has been said "the people who are without vision shall surely perish." We have certainly been without vision in regard to the physical care of our children and the result is a 63 per cent efficiency, which low standard might be our undoing. Whit the people of America need !s more health.
SHEET MUSIC WOULD MAKE HIT WITH PS
By FRANK T. TAYLOR (United Press Staff Correspondent.) . WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY IN FRANCE. June IS. (By Mall.) The boys want music over here In the trench's. If you want t make a hit with a soldier boy, send him some of the latest sons? hits, so that he and his pals can try to "harmonize" on them during the long evenings they spend In 'he trenches or among the ruins or somewhere In the woods. European officers say the American army is the most musical in the world. The boys are always going about their work, whether It's rmrchine into 'the trench's or filling up a shell hole In the road, with a song. A song to sing Is a great thing. It boosts up the spirit and the morale, and makes a man forget the things he doesn't like. The fellows in the army who can't sing, always whistle. Somewhere In every group Is an instrument of some kind, often nthinr more than a couple of strings over a cigar box wl;h a handle on it but something that will make a tune. The boys usually get near a "hut" that has a phonograph now and then and trv out the songs. But they want new ones, the latest ones from America. he soldier songs that take so long to drift across the sea. unless some one sends sheet music. ja if you want to make a hit with n doughboy" send him some sheet music, the latest thing you can get tm Brcadvay. The best way to send It Is in an envelope, sealed tight, as first class matter, for otherwise it may be lest.
