William Jennings Price. William Jennings Price, American minister to Panama, is in Washington conferring with Secretary Lansing- and other officials. He reports teat reforms are being worked out in Panama and Colon by the American troops policing: those cities. He states that saloons are being: driven from the prescribed districts and the sale of intoxicants stopped. Intervention by the American troops apparently had been justified by the lack of disorder at the elections recently. Supervision of the American authorities ilso secured fairness in the elections.

OFFICIAL FOOD NEWS

By Dr. Harry E. Barnard, Federal Food Adminlatrator for Indiana.

Displays of cakes and p!es at county fairs and the State fair will not bo at the expense of a special allotment of sugar or ficmr. Individual exhibitors must take from their apportionment of both staples. Fair Judges have been asked to make their awards upon the basis of conformity to th federal food regulations.

Fruits and vegetables packed In Indiana for the war and navy departments will be Inspected by representatives of the Federal Feed Administrator for Indiana. This Is at the reQuest of tho government officials.

Increased demands tipoa the baking division made It necessary that It find new quarters and hereafter !t will be found at SIT Merchants Bank building, Indianapolis.

Indiana farmers are nrged to sow a normal acreage In rye. Rye is no longer a wheat flour substitute, .but there is a possibility of a wheat shortage nest year.

County agricultural agents are distributing books in which are to be st down the acreage of wheat threshed by threshers who will be held for the fieures by the department of agriculture. The books also ask for comparative statement of yields, acreage and price for threshing for 1917 and 1918. The government thus obtains valuable information as to the wheat in the country, its cost and the average yield per acre.

The Food Administration has received Inquiries from over the State as to whether the government would make any guarantees as to hog prices. Information received from one of the county agricultural agents indicates that some farmers have made preparations to hog off corn and soy beans, fattening the light pigs that nsually go to market at thl3 time of year, but that fear Is now felt in some quarters that the market will not be sustained, and the prospect for an Increased production of pork has served to discourage many farmers from proceeding with their purpose. The food administration advises that it will not guarantee the price of pork, but, as in 1917, will undertake to maintain a minimum of J15.50 per hundred pounds.

Radical increases in milk prices which threatened the citizens of Marion have been adjusted by a local committee composed of the judg-s of the circuit court, the largest milk producer in Grant county, and the superintendent of Marion's largest bottling works. The price agreement is effective at once, on the basis of 10 cents a quart and 6 cents a pint for bottled, pasturized milk; cream, bottled, 40 cents a quart, 15 cents a half-pint; and an increase of 10 cents per hundred pounds was granted to producers for milk delivered at bottling stations, making the new price $2.75. As a conservation measure, consumers are requested to discontinue the use of whipping cream. Referring local price disputes to a representative citizen committee for adjustment is in line with the policy suggested by the state food administrator, and the prompt and satisfactory adjustment at Marion is typical of the success of the plan.
